Z is for Zygote ๐Ÿงซ๐Ÿงฌ

In human pregnancy, a zygote is the single cell formed immediately after fertilization, when a s***m cell ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ’ฆ successfully unites with an egg cell ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿฅš. This zygote contains the complete set of chromosomes (46, 23 from each parent) ๐Ÿงฌ, carrying all the genetic information needed to develop into a baby ๐Ÿ‘ถ.

The zygote then travels down the fallopian tube ๐Ÿงญ while undergoing cell division โž—, eventually forming a blastocyst and implanting into the uterus ๐Ÿก๐Ÿงป.

The process begins when a s***m penetrates the outer layer of an egg, merging their genetic material ๐Ÿ’ž. The resulting cell, containing the combined genetic information, is the zygote. It immediately starts dividingโ€”first into two cells, then four, and so on ๐Ÿ”„โ€”as it moves toward the uterus.

This rapid cell division leads to the formation of a blastocyst ๐ŸŸ , a hollow ball of cells with:

๐Ÿ”นan inner cell mass (which will become the embryo) ๐Ÿ‘ผ

๐Ÿ”นan outer layer (which will become the placenta and support structures) ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฉธ

The blastocyst travels to the uterus and attaches to the uterine lining (endometrium) ๐Ÿงท๐Ÿฉบ, marking the beginning of pregnancy ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿคฐ.

Y is for Yolk Sac ๐Ÿฅš๐Ÿ‘ถ

A yolk sac is a structure that develops in early pregnancy ๐Ÿคฐ, providing essential nutrients ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ and supporting the developing embryo before the placenta takes over ๐ŸŒฑ. It's usually visible on ultrasound around 5โ€“6 weeks of gestation ๐Ÿ“…๐Ÿ”. The yolk sac also plays a role in blood cell formation ๐Ÿฉธ and other early developmental processes ๐Ÿงฌ.

The yolk sac is the primary source of nourishment for the developing embryo before the placenta is fully functional ๐Ÿ’›. It's the initial site where blood cells are produced ๐Ÿงซ and it also contributes to the development of the umbilical cord and other important structures ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿงต.

A normal yolk sac is typically less than 6mm in diameter and near spherical in shape โšช๐Ÿ“. The yolk sac gradually diminishes as the pregnancy progresses ๐Ÿ“‰ and is often not visible after 14โ€“20 weeks โณ๐Ÿ‘‹.

X is for S*X (we had to think outside the box for this one!) โค๏ธ๐Ÿคฐ

S*x โ€“ in most cases it's how they got there in the first place ๐Ÿ˜‰ (apart from our miracle IVF babies! ๐Ÿ‘ถโœจ) โ€“ but we still feel so awkward about discussing s*x and pregnancy ๐Ÿ˜….

S*x is a perfectly normal, healthy and enjoyable act ๐Ÿ’• that is safe to do during pregnancy, unless you have been advised otherwise ๐Ÿฉบ. S*x will not harm the baby, as it is protected by the amniotic fluid and the uterine muscles ๐Ÿซง๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ. As long as you feel comfortable to do so, and you enjoy it, s*x can help us to relax ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ and increase our Oxytocin ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ž which can relieve stress and improve your mood ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŒˆ.

However, if you have had any vaginal bleeding ๐Ÿฉธ, your waters have broken ๐Ÿ’ง, you are at a high risk of preterm labour ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ•’, or you feel anxious or uncomfortable during s*x ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ, then we would not recommend it โŒ.

W is for Water Birth ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ‘ถ

Waterbirth involves using a birthing pool during labour and delivery of your baby. The warm water can help with pain management, relaxation, and mobility, allowing women to move around more easily and potentially find more comfortable positions. ๐Ÿ›โœจ

Most NHS hospitals will have at least one pool available to use during your labour and birth, but it is important to check with your Midwife or Local Maternity Unit ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ. If you are planning to deliver your baby at home, you can hire an inflatable birth pool ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ›Ÿ. These come in different shapes and sizes, so you will be able to choose one that most suitably fits your birthing space. Some women choose to labour and deliver their babies in water, and others choose to use it for labour but come out of the pool for delivery. This is entirely your choice and preferences change from Mum to Mum ๐Ÿคฑ๐Ÿ’–.

Some of the benefits of choosing to labour and/or birth in water are:

๐Ÿ‘ฃPain Management โ€“ The warm water can help relax muscles and reduce pain, potentially decreasing the need for pain relief medication ๐Ÿ’†โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’Š.

๐Ÿ‘ฃRelaxation โ€“ The buoyancy of the water can help women feel more relaxed and in control ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŒธ.

๐Ÿ‘ฃMobility โ€“ The water supports the woman's weight, allowing for greater freedom of movement and helping with positioning ๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’ฆ.

๐Ÿ‘ฃCalm Birth โ€“ Some women report that waterbirth results in a calmer, more relaxed baby ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ‘ถ

V is for Vitamin D ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ’Š

It is recommended that all pregnant women ๐Ÿคฐ and breastfeeding mothers ๐Ÿคฑ take a supplement ๐Ÿ’Š of 10 micrograms of Vitamin D ๐ŸŒž every day.

Vitamin D regulates the amount of calcium ๐Ÿฆด and phosphate โš›๏ธ in the body, which are needed to keep bones ๐Ÿฆด, teeth ๐Ÿ˜, and muscles ๐Ÿ’ช healthy. Our bodies make Vitamin D when our skin is exposed to summer sunlight โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿงด.

Vitamin D is also in some foods ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ, including:

Oily fish ๐ŸŸ (such as salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines) โ€“ during pregnancy ๐Ÿคฐ, you should eat no more than 2 portions/week ๐Ÿงฎ

Egg yolks ๐Ÿฅš

Red meat ๐Ÿฅฉ

Fortified foods ๐Ÿฅฃ โ€“ such as some fat spreads ๐Ÿงˆ and breakfast cereals ๐Ÿš

Liver ๐Ÿ– โ€“ โ— but avoid eating liver during pregnancy ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿคฐ

Because Vitamin D is only found in a small number of foods ๐Ÿงพ, whether naturally occurring ๐ŸŒฑ or added โž•, it is difficult to get enough from foods alone.

U is for Umbilical Cord Clamping โœ‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ถ

Umbilical cord clamping refers to the clamping and cutting โœ‚๏ธ of the umbilical cord ๐Ÿชข after a baby is born ๐Ÿ‘ถ, separating the baby from the placenta ๐Ÿงซ.

Delayed cord clamping โฑ๏ธ or optimal cord clamping โœ… is a process whereby practitioners and parents wait until the cord has stopped pulsating โค๏ธ and turned white โšช, before clamping and cutting.

This has been shown to have many benefits to baby ๐ŸŒŸ, including:

A full volume of blood ๐Ÿฉธ in your baby at birth, which gives increased iron levels ๐Ÿ’ช up until they are 6 months old ๐Ÿ“†, helping with growth ๐Ÿ“ˆ and emotional development ๐Ÿ˜Š.

An increased amount of stem cells ๐Ÿงฌ, which helps with your babyโ€™s growth ๐ŸŒฑ and supports their immune system ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ.

There is strong research evidence ๐Ÿ“š showing that delayed cord clamping can prevent deaths โš ๏ธ of premature babies ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿ•’ as well as improving their overall health prospects ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿ’–.

There is good research evidence showing that delayed cord clamping can prevent deaths of premature babies as well as improving their overall health prospects.

T is for Tongue Tie ๐Ÿ‘…๐Ÿ‘ถ

Tongue-tie is where the piece of skin connecting the tongue to the bottom of the mouth ๐Ÿ‘„ is shorter or tighter than usual. It's most common in babies ๐Ÿ‘ถ. It may not cause any problems, but if it does, then treatment is available ๐Ÿ’‰.

Tongue-tie may not cause any problems, but it can make it difficult to move the tongue ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ‘…. For example, you may not be able to move your tongue side-to-side โ†”๏ธ, lift it up โฌ†๏ธ, or stick it out ๐Ÿ˜›. In babies, tongue-tie can make it difficult to breastfeed ๐Ÿคฑ or bottle-feed ๐Ÿผ.

Treatment is not usually needed โŒ if tongue-tie is not causing any problems. If it's causing issues, such as difficulty feeding ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ in babies, treatment may include:

Breastfeeding or bottle-feeding advice ๐Ÿ“‹๐Ÿผ from a trained health professional ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ

A small surgery โœ‚๏ธ to cut the piece of skin connecting the tongue to the bottom of the mouth

If you have any concerns about your babyโ€™s feeding ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ๐Ÿ‘ถ or suspect your baby may have tongue-tie, seek support ๐Ÿ†˜ from your maternity team ๐Ÿฅ or a local IBCLC ๐Ÿง‘โ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฌ (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant).
