It is a work in progress, but then aren't we all?!

So proud and humbled by this amazing experience of shadowing teaching a level 2 counselling skills course.
There have been so many challenges along the way, and I wasn't sure as I entered in to it if teaching/tutoring was for me.
But this group and my mentors gave me the opportunity to experience facilitating the course that originally opened the doors for me to the counselling world and helped me to recognise that this is my calling.
To be able to take other people on that same journey and open their eyes and their hearts to helping work, and inevitably themselves and each other, has been an honour and a privilege.
It's a bitter sweet end, as the centre is not offering the training in September and so I won't immediately have the opportunity to lead my own level 2s.
But I now know that I love to teach and want to find an opportunity to do it all again... So let's hope the future holds some more opportunities 🤞

Love this analogy! It just makes so much sense, piecing things together, finding patterns, creating order from seeming chaos. It's playful and cathartic for some, frustrating and bewildering for others, much like therapy can be. And sometimes it can seem that things get worse or more muddled and jumbled on the way to finding that clarity, and that's OK!

This poem speaks to me of the potential for chaos AND growth.

Of change being a natural part of growth
And the power of potential, even in what feels like the bleakest of conditions.

I believe people have a natural tendancy to strive, not just to survive.

I belive therapy can harness that natural tendancy and provide the conditions for that striving that makes growth possible, even when everything feels hopeless.

Life is chaotic and untidy... and full of beautiful potential!

This is a message to healthcare professionals, fitness professionals and the general public who think shaming people about being overweight is somehow going to magically help them to lose weight...

Do Better!

If shame were the answer to weight loss they probably wouldn't have the problem in the first place!

I have heard too many anecdotes over the years of clumsy (if I am giving the benefit of the doubt), and some downright rude interactions that my clients have had with professionals who are involved in their health care. (Care being the operative word).

There seems to be a lack of compassion towards people who present as overweight and an assumption that their health problems are a result of the extra weight they carry as opposed to the other way around?!

This is particularly true when it comes to people who struggle with chronic pain for a variety of reasons. So often I hear of people who were once fit and very active and thoroughly enjoyed their able body to the full.

But circumstances change, and the body that once ran 10 miles a week and could metabolise the diet to match whilst maintaining a healthy weight is suddenly having to adapt to minimal movement to protect from pain flare ups.

My point is this, people don't need your shame, they need your help and professional advice and support.

Dont assume the circumstances in which the weight was gained, and definitely don't assume their lack of effort to try and keep the weight off! If you haven't got the time to ask and find out, try at least a little compassion and sensitivity.

This person may be grieving the body they used to enjoy, the life they had and envisioned for themselves for the future.

They don't need your shame adding to that. Most of us do that enough for ourselves!!

It's

For me it's a time to let my friends, family, colleagues and clients know that they are safe to talk to me about their mental health.

That this is not a taboo subject, everyone has mental health, and it's not only OK, but really beneficial to talk about it with others and share.

What that looks like for me may differ from friend, to family, to client, but the point is you can talk to me about where you're at openly and safely without fear of judgement.

Mental health is always on the table for discussion.

How equipped are you for talking about mental health? Yours and other people's.
