Nowadays the word ‘Mindfulness’ is increasingly used in so many ways, but…. What does it actually mean?

According to a Zen story, a monk travelled a long way through inclement weather and difficult terrains to visit a Zen Master. During the journey he wondered how impressed the Master would be at the progress of his studies. Once they met, the monk was asked on what side of his sandals he had put the umbrella in the morning. He couldn’t answer and so he spent the next several years deepening his mindfulness practice.

Have you ever found yourself driving somewhere and not remembering how you got there? Or forgetting whether you locked the front door? Or trying to figure out where you last left your phone?
These are simple examples that show us when we are not being present.

So often the time pressure and the multiple demands of modern life can send us in a spin of multitasking, ruminating, worrying, rushing.. Sound familiar? You are not alone.

With practice we can become more mindful, of our thoughts, feelings, sensations, repetitive patterns…
Practising mindfulness helps us create a pause, no matter how small, to bring awareness to what’s going on in our bodies and minds.

As they say, awareness is the first step for any change so here’s to cultivating more mindfulness in our daily lives!

The sap is rising, the light hours are increasing, here’s to Spring!
In Chinese traditional medicine spring is associated with the Wood element, time of new beginning and growth, of cultivating strength whilst remaining flexible just as young saplings do.
Also season of the liver, the big detoxifying organ in our body, home to the emotions of anger, resentment but also creativity and humour.
And time for all things leafy and green and something sour too. Does sourdough count 🤭?
