Excited for this weekends mini adventure, (Yorkshire 3 Peaks) this simple kit has been excellent for endurance strengthening and stretching. It has helped form part of my training and recovery from many many long walks.

The roller has been mainly used to improve core, balance as well as stretching and pre and post muscle rolling, wouldn’t be without it 😊

Balance, Proprioception and strengthening for falls prevention;

Around 76,000 hip fractures occur each year in the UK, either caused by falls or osteoporosis (data.gov.uk, 2022) this could be reduced, if exercises were completed to mitigate the ageing affects.

Ankle stability and proprioception are key to maintain good balance and prevent falls/sprains.
Proprioception is being able to sense where your bodies location is and the movement and actions you are completing, for example... walking without looking at your feet- knowing where your foot will be placed on the ground.

Having good balance is one of the best areas to focus on to prevent falls or ankle sprains.

Prevention is the best cure!

Posture
Poor posture can lead to a variety of problems including lower back pain, shoulder tension and neck pain, over time a poor posture can negatively impact on your body. This can be a result of looking at the ground when walking, sleeping with too many pillows, driving all day, spending most of your working day sitting a desk.

How can you improve your posture?

- Regular walks, look ahead
- try sleeping with one or no pillows
- suitable chair to sit on for long periods- with regular breaks
- exercises
The best advice is a balance of regular exercises, including stretching, strengthening and movement - doesn't have to be high impact walking is excellent.

Half the problem is knowing you have bad posture, this doesn't often come to light until you are in pain, best treatment is prevention- act now so no problem tomorrow.

These are generic tips that I hope will help, if you would prefer an individual assessment please contact me, not all of these will work for everyone and if you have a specific injury please consult for individual assessment.

Picture shows tape used to provide feedback, to act as a reminder if you begin to slouch to bring shoulders back- this is all this tape is used for in this example.
