‘The Friends’ was established over twenty-five years ago by the late Mr Harry Bennett, Consultant Surgeon, with the aim of raising funds to provide additional comforts for patients, over and above those provided by the NHS.

Our membership consists of former staff, patients and relatives, and people who simply have an interest in the hospital or in this type of voluntary work. Over the years, ‘The Friends’ has raised over £300,000 to directly benefit patients, young and old attending Altnagelvin. We have purchased a variety of equipment and furniture for patients – from ice-makers to recliners, from televisions to hairdressing sets and from baby strollers to speech therapy mirrors, and lots more. ‘The Friends’ is a registered charity, which means among other things, that it is exempt from having to pay VAT. This also means that every penny raised goes into buying comforts for patients.
