A new trend is circulating where young people are being added to group chats without their consent or knowledge.

These chats can sometimes include harmful or inappropriate content that’s not suitable for children.

If you’re a parent or carer, it’s a good time to:
⚠️ Have an open conversation with your child about online and phone safety.
📱 Check privacy settings and parental controls on their devices and apps.
🕹 Remember: most games and social media platforms have multiple communication features including text and voice chats, private messages, image sharing, video calls, and livestreaming.
🔒 While some platforms have moderators to remove harmful content, not all do.

With technology now easily accessible, help keep your children safe online.

If you believe one of your or your child’s accounts has been hacked, report it to Action Fraud: https://www.actionfraud.police.uk

⚠️ Safety alert: Puffin has paused sales of its children’s Spy Dog, Spy Pups and Spy Cat series after discovering that a website printed in some editions now redirects to adult content with no age verification.

The link, originally used to promote the books and characters, has been taken over by an unrelated third party.

📚 Puffin is contacting schools and local authorities and has urged libraries to remove the books from shelves.

🏠 Families are advised to check copies at home and ensure children do not visit the web address listed in the book.

If needed, you can cover the printed link with a permanent marker to prevent accidental access.

The issue affects some editions across the series.

A nationwide test of the UK’s emergency alert service will take place at 3pm on Sunday 7 September 2025. The alerts will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby, such as flooding or fires.

However, we are concerned about the potential safety risks to survivors who may be keeping their phones hidden from an abuser, as the alert is a loud, siren-like sound with a screen message and vibration.

Survivors can opt out from receiving emergency alerts to avoid their device from being detected.

Emergency Alerts will be sent to compatible mobile phones within an area of risk. Emergency alerts work on:
• iPhones running iOS 14.5 or later
• Android phones and tablets running Android 11 or later
The alert may still be received on earlier versions of Android. To check, search your device settings for ‘emergency alerts’.

Opting out of emergency alerts - GOV.UK

How to opt out:

iPhones and Android phones
To opt out:
1. Search your settings for ‘emergency alerts’.
2. Turn off ‘severe alerts’ and ‘extreme alerts’.

Other mobile phones and tablets
Depending on the manufacturer and software version of your phone, emergency alerts settings may be called different names, such as ‘wireless emergency alerts’ or ‘emergency broadcasts’.
The settings can usually be found in one of the following ways. Go to:
• ‘message’, then ‘message settings, then ‘wireless emergency alerts’, then ‘alert’
• ‘settings’, then ‘sounds’, then ‘advanced’, then ‘emergency broadcasts’
• ‘settings’, then ‘general settings’, then ‘emergency alerts’
Then turn off ‘severe alerts’, ‘extreme alerts’ and ‘test alerts’.
