Frozen shoulder.
After watching a programme recently on the which showed a lady suffering with a frozen shoulder and the subsequent treatment options for her, I thought I would write a post about how an Amatsu therapist would treat the same condition. Basically her options were an extremely painful injection or just to leave it till it got better – best estimates for frozen shoulders are usually around 18 months when left to their own devices. Luckily for this particular lady the injection was successful and she gained good movement within a few weeks, unfortunately many other people are not so lucky and after having the three recommended injections are left to struggle on till it rights itself.
A frozen shoulder can have many things which contribute to the overall condition, it usually involves the scapula or shoulder blade being unable to move well, which is fundamental to good shoulder function and mobility. Over time, the range of motion decreases and the shoulder in turn is used less, strain in the soft tissue – the muscles, ligaments and fascia – increases as does the potential for pain which in turn again causes us to not use the joint as much. The cycle of increasing pain and restriction can go on with increasing symptoms until we reach a point where the shoulder has become “frozen”.
The scapula can become restricted in its movement for a variety of reasons, injury, over use, repetitive movements etc but on a holistic level, there can be faults in the overall structure of your body which places additional strain on the shoulder, indeed there are muscles which attach to your lower back and again on the back of the upper arm so there is a direct connection between your lower back and your shoulder. It is very important to assess the whole body when treating a serious condition like this to achieve the most beneficial results.
In a typical treatment for frozen shoulder I would assess your entire body and shoulder and address any underlying alignment issues which could have an impact on your condition. Treatment to the shoulder itself has to be gentle as the surrounding tissues can be very tight and painful but is done with full consideration of your mobility.
Treatment takes place fully clothed, in a private clinic, there are no painful invasive manipulations and a full bespoke treatment plan is put in place for you from a therapist with over 20+ years of experience.
