I’m really pleased to share that I have officially passed the theory section of my Foot Health Practitioner course with a Merit (76%)!

This hasn’t been a quick course. It has involved over a year of theory training and 12 assignments, covering a wide range of topics including nail care, skin conditions, infection control, assessment, and safe treatment techniques.

I’ll be honest — there were moments where I nearly gave up. Balancing work, family life, ShawScope, and studying hasn’t always been easy. But I kept going, kept submitting the assignments, and I’m really proud to have reached this stage.

Next step: my two week clinical training in September, where I’ll be putting all the theory into practice.

Once completed, ShawScope will be expanding to offer Foot Health appointments, including treatment for:

• Toenail care
• Corns
• Calluses (hard skin)
• Verrucae

My aim has always been to bring professional, affordable care directly to people’s homes, and this will be another service ShawScope will soon be able to provide.

Full steam ahead for foot health at ShawScope!

🌼 Hay Fever, Blocked Ears & Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

During hay fever season many people notice their ears feel blocked or muffled. It’s not always earwax — sometimes it’s something called Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD).

The Eustachian tube connects your middle ear to the back of your nose and throat. Its job is to balance pressure and allow fluid to drain from the ear.

When you have hay fever, pollen can cause inflammation and swelling in the nose and sinuses, which can also affect these tubes. When they don’t open properly, pressure builds up and the ear can feel full, blocked, or like it needs to “pop.”

Common symptoms include:
👂 A blocked or full feeling in the ear
🔊 Muffled hearing
🎧 Popping or crackling sounds
✈️ A sensation similar to ear pressure on a plane

Sometimes people assume this feeling is earwax, but often the ears themselves are actually clear and the problem is related to pressure behind the eardrum.

Things that may help relieve the pressure include:

🌬️ Steam inhalation – breathing in warm steam can help reduce nasal congestion.
💊 Pharmacy treatments – antihistamines or steroid nasal sprays can help calm allergy inflammation.
👨‍⚕️ GP advice – particularly if symptoms persist or are severe.
🎈 Eustachian tube balloon devices (often called “Otovent” or similar) – these can help gently equalise pressure by opening the tubes.

If your ears feel blocked, it’s always helpful to check whether earwax is present first, as the sensation can feel very similar.

I’m a Sucker for the Stats 📊

The results are in, and the map doesn't lie! There’s something so satisfying about seeing a month’s worth of ShawScope life distilled into a heat map. If you know me, you know I can’t get enough of these analytics.

A small update from ShawScope as we approach the new financial year.

Card and online invoice payments cost the business hundreds of pounds each year in transaction fees. To help cover this without increasing treatment prices, a £1.50 fee will now apply to card and online invoice payments.

Bank transfer and cash will remain completely free, as these do not incur any fees for us.

The good news is that all ShawScope service prices will remain the same for the coming year, helping us stay affordable compared to local providers.

We are also increasing our travel fee to £2.50 per mile, although this will not affect most patients as the majority of visits are within our usual 10-mile service area.

As many of you know, our beautiful baby boy has arrived and I’m currently taking some time off to be at home with my family. It’s a very special season for us ❤️

But while he’s been sleeping over the past month (and during those quiet late-night feeds!), I’ve secretly been working away in the background…
