Labour Stages
🌿Birthing stage (2nd stage) is when your cervix is fully dilated (unless birthing a premature baby when dilation could be less).
This is when the baby is coming out of the uterus (womb) and moving down the birth canal to be born.
Medical professionals may put time limits on how long women can be in this stage before offering interventions to assist the birth however you have the final choice. Assisted delivery options are usually offered due to fetal distress or the birthing mother being too exhausted to push.
Women can feel a range of different sensations due to baby pressing on nerve endings.
'Crowning' happens when the biggest part of babies head is being born which lasts for a few seconds and can feel a sensation of stinging or burning. Once babies head is born labour can stop for a few moments whilst babies shoulders are getting into position of the widest part of the pelvis. Once baby is in the best position, surges will return and usually birthed within a couple of surges and final pushes 🌸
The final part is birthing the placenta.

🌸TOP TIPS🌸
Midwives may encourage panting through the birthing stage.
U.F.O - birthing positions being upright, forward, and open, will assist in getting baby into the best birthing position and most comfortable for you.
Remember that you have options and you make the final choice. Just because a form of intervention could be suggested does not mean you have to. However, medical professionals will suggest what they feel is most safe for you and baby.

Labour Stages
🌿Transition phase - this is often the most intense, yet shortest phase of labour lasting between 10-40 minutes. Transition means 'change' and it's when women move from breathing through surges, to pushing (bearing down) between the end of active labour and the birthing stage. Your body releases a big rush of adrenaline to assist in these last moments before the birthing stage of your baby. You may feel like you need to poo, and intense pressure as baby presses down on nerve endings.
Your uterus (womb) is no longer drawing up, instead it's pushing down from the top, sending reflex signals to your brain.
Surges get a lot closer, usually surging for around 1 minute, with a 1 minute rest between. Often in the Transition phase women experience the feeling that they can't do it, it's too much and they just want any way for baby to be out of them. This is totally normal and YOU CAN do it.

🌸TOP TIPS🌸
Birth partners can be absolutely vital in this stage - reminding you that you can do it!
Positive reminders that you're so close to meeting baby!
Reaffirm to yourself in your mind or out loud "I trust my body, my body knows what to do".
Going with the flow with your body, breathing through the sensations and using visualisations of meeting baby can have a positive impact and something to focus on.
✨️Some women will experience a "rest and be thankful" stage where it feels like everything stops, your body is giving you time to recover before the final stage.

Labour Stages
🌿Active Labour (1st stage) occurs when surges (contractions) are more regular and getting shorter in the time between a surge to be around 5 minutes between and last around 1 minute. This stage is when the most significant opening of the cervix happens, progressing from around 4-9cm .
Breathing becomes more purposeful, you concentrate through surges and you may find yourself moving around more, often women will sway or circle their hips but over time naturally want to get lower and lower to the floor. Some women will become more vocal during this stage, making noises, groaning or mooing.
Towards the end of active labour you may begin to start feeling the urge to push as you progress into the 'transition' phase.

🌸TOP TIPS🌸
Comfort measures are great to use through active labour. Focusing on your calm breathing techniques, visualisations and reminding yourself that your body knows what it's doing will benefit. The use of a birthing comb, or TENS machine can also assist to ease discomfort levels through surges and continuing to conserve energy through sips of fluid and light snacks. Your body being vocal can be an instinctive reaction and is perfectly okay! You do not have to be quiet, to have a controlled and calm birth.

Labour Stages
🌿Early labour can be identified as surges (contractions) slowly begin to get more of a pattern and can become slightly more predictable, unlike the latent phase. Surges last around 30-40 seconds but can still be quite spaced out in between.
You may start to feel discomfort and you go quiet to concentrate however you can often still hold a conversation between them and go about your day.
Early labour surges can stop for a short time, or trundle along and build slowly.
You may find that you start to get frustrated or irritable by noises, positions or things that usually would not bother you so much.

🌸TOP TIPS🌸
Listen to your body, rest, eat light snacks and keep hydrated to conserve energy for labour progressing. Breathing techniques and light movement can help ease discomfort, as can a warm bath or shower. Staying relaxed and calm in your environment will help keep a positive mindset and continue to assist your body in progressing through labour most efficiently.

Labour Stages...
🌿 Labour can for some women feel like a long process, especially in the early stages of latent labour which women can experience for hours or even days. It's the longest stage where your body is working by ripening and slowly shortening the cervix over time.
✨️ Contractions (surges) are the tightening of the uterus (womb) which can vary in intensity, they can be irregular in how long they last and how long in-between. Your cervix starts to open as you progress into the next stages of labour.

🌸TOP TIPS🌸 - try to use relaxation tools and techniques to keep your muscles loose to work more efficiently and a calm mindset. It can feel like it's dragging on, however remember your body is doing important work in preparation for your babies birth.
Try to get rest if latent labour starts towards the night time and during the day, light movement and being upright can assist.
Keeping hydrated and start to increase your oxytocin bubble with home comforts, affection, feeling warm, cosy and safe ❤️

📆Birth is INTENSE - and I'm not going to fluffy coat it as that's not my job, and it's not helpful, however there IS a difference between feeling intense sensations and some discomfort, and feeling as though your birth is associated with 'PAIN' and feeling unbearable.

Many women fear birth due to the pain they've heard about, or read about, or possibly even experienced previously - but what happens if you don't associate birth with pain?.. a shift of your mindset can have a huge impact on birth. Understanding how your mind PLUS having tension in your muscles, can spin a cycle of fear and pain, can be a huge game changer, with positive tools and techniques to put in place 🌸

This is one of the important things I cover in my Birth Preparation sessions as well as my full Hypnobirthing courses.

It's Important to understand what your body goes through, what is happening if you feel like you've hit a wall and can't go on anymore through labour, and then if it seems like everything has stopped..

📩 Message me to discuss further about what personally, tailored to you, sessions or courses I can offer.

🚫 STOP ❗️❗️❗️❗️ doing this during your pregnancy and here's WHY...

Love a drama? One born every minute? A TV soap with a dramatic birth that leaves you on the edge of your seat?

⚠️ NO, NO and for the love of NO!
STOP WATCHING THESE RIGHT NOW!!

Your mind is a wonderful thing, but actually, you are negatively impacting your upcoming birth by watching these things whilst you're pregnant.. ❓️WHY?...❓️
Your brain is subconsciously soaking in all that drama about birth, trauma, things going wrong, pain, screaming, lying on a bed.. this is telling your brain what birth looks like.. and your body will work towards that as being a norm.
Turn off that TV, remove yourself from seeing or hearing (even from friends or family) negative/traumatic birth stories and take some POSITIVE ACTION.

🌿Research - Embrace - Read🌿
Fill your subconscious mind with positive births, watch positive birth videos of hospital births, home births, inductions... read positive birth stories about caesareans.. whatever type of birth you are planning towards (though being open minded to all births) then use this vital time in pregnancy to soak up all the positive and calm, controlled ways to birth so that becomes reality!!

I cannot stress this enough ! 🌿🌸 Hypnobirthing Teacher in Dorchester Dorset .
