If your nervous system is dysregulated, chances are, so is your menstrual cycle

Our menstrual cycle does not work on its own, it is intricately connected to every system, organ and message within your body, particularly your nervous system

Our bodies are always working to protect us, so when we encounter stress, the first thing that’s gonna happen is entering survival mode, which means our menstrual cycle is gonna go on the back burner - our bodies can only reproduce when we are thriving, not surviving

If you want to find peace with your menstrual cycle, you need to be bringing safety to your nervous system

This doesn’t have to be a massive overhaul of your life, it’s about identifying where there may be stressors, built up tension, suppressed trauma, and giving yourself the space to feel and process - that might be going for a walk in nature, taking a bubble bath, journaling, saying no, getting an early night - every time you listen to your body, it’s feelings and emotions, you and providing safety to your nervous system

A period doesn’t always equal ovulation

Often we assume that if we have a monthly period we must have ovulated, but receiving our bleed isn’t actually giving us the full picture

It is possible to have some bleeding and experience an anovulatory cycle where an egg isn’t released from an o***y for fertilisation

Why might this happen?

If you are on hormonal birth control
Chronically stressed
Under eating
Over exercising
Experiencing amenorrhea (no periods)

The risk of this?

There will be insufficient levels of oestrogen and progesterone available to support all the vital functions and processes related to these hormones such as brain, nervous system, heart and bone health

How can we track whether ovulation occurred?

Measuring a rise in basal body temperature in the morning
Tracking cervical fluid and cervical positioning

This provides us with such rich information which can help take us from guesswork to a targeted approach to support our bodies and hormones

This is a core pillar of my work with clients. Understanding whether regular ovulation is taking place is the starting point for determining cycle health and the root cause of any symptoms and imbalances being experienced

Get some sunlight in the eyes

Move daily

Having these things in place is setting your body and hormones up to thrive and these are all things I would encourage any client of mine to make space for in a way that feels good and manageable for them
