Alex's MPNST Journey Alex is 9 years old and recently diagnosed with a very rare type of cancer.

Just a few little updates. Alex's most recent MRI scan did not show any traces of soft tissue tumour left behind and the CT scans he had on his chest were all clear. The tests performed on his bone tumour showed 95% necrosis of the tumour after having 2 rounds of chemotherapy which was much better than anticipated. The plan going forward is to continue with chemotherapy. So far Alex has had 4 rounds, we have another 3 to go and he will be scanned every 12 weeks. We are still waiting on a decision about radiotherapy.

Welcome to my page. I am planning on documenting Alex's journey/treatment to raise awareness of cancer, particularly MPNST. It is unusual to see this type of cancer in someone Alex's age, the median age people develop this is 49 years old. Also, it normally develops in the soft tissue, however, with Alex it grew within the bone of his humerus. There were very few signs that there was a problem, around Christmas 2023 he mentioned his arm was aching a bit and felt funny. Then at the end of January we had a day out and Alex got knocked into the side of the water rapids at center parcs and instantly said his arm really hurt. A couple of days later his arm swelled up massively and then he could hardly move it so I took him to A&E where they x-rayed him, suspecting a dislocation or fracture. It was then they discovered a large tumour within the bone. From there everything moved quickly, we were referred to Stanmore orthopaedic Hospital in London for biopsies, ct scans and a full bodied MRI scan. They suspected it was some type of cancer from the start, so we were also sent to Adenbrookes for a Hickman line to be fitted and chemotherapy began soon after.

Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor
What is Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor?
Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor, or MPNST, is a cancer of the cells that form the sheath that covers and protects peripheral nerves. Peripheral nerves are those outside of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). MPNST is a type of sarcoma. This cancer grows in the soft tissues of the body, such as muscle, fat, tendons, ligaments, lymph and blood vessels, nerves, and other tissue that connects and supports the body. MPSNST grows quickly and can spread to other parts of the body.
