Today was another magical afternoon visiting the dementia nursing floor at Sandiacre Court with our wellbeing dogs. 🐾
As soon as we arrived, residents’ eyes lit up. One gentleman was again shouting it was “dog day!” and honestly, the excitement was contagious.
One of the most beautiful moments came from a gentleman who doesn’t usually engage too much. He first noticed the dogs walking across the floor, watching them quietly from his chair. I gently placed one of our dogs where he could see her clearly. Slowly, he reached out his hand and began tickling Rosie’s long, soft fur.
Then something wonderful happened.
He started smiling.
We continued bringing each dog over one by one so he could stroke them. I’d never heard this gentleman speak before, but when I gently asked if he liked the dogs, he looked into my eyes and softly said, “Yes.”
It was such a beautiful moment.
Another resident has formed the most special bond with Jake. Every time we arrive, he seeks her out and calmly settles onto her knee while she strokes him. Watching that connection grow each visit is incredibly heartwarming.
One gentleman enjoyed sharing stories about his life before moving into the home, telling us about his daily routines, gardening, and feeding the birds.
And then we had the funniest moment of the afternoon…
A gentleman walked into the lounge, stopped still when he saw the dogs, and Mini slowly wandered over, tail wagging. He scooped her up for a cuddle… and the next thing we knew he was trying to take Mini back to his room with him! 😂
It was such a joyful moment for everyone in the room.
Honestly it was a beautiful afternoon. The smiles, the memories, the conversations, the comfort, it means so much to residents, staff, us and of course our wonderful dogs too.
A truly magical afternoon. 🐾💛
