This morning I had a powerful conversation with criminologist Herrity, as we explored and shared our experiences in custodial settings. When we place sound and the senses at the heart of our inquiry, a whole world of information comes into view...the textures of a place, the sensory deluge, the noises that travel through walls, the silences that carry weight. So much of this is easily overlooked, yet it shapes how we feel, how we relate, and how we make meaning.
Kate’s research and the way she asks questions invites deep reflection. It brings us back to something simple and vital: our shared humanity.
One of the reasons I have a radio show is to gently remove the hierarchy within our senses. In a world that keeps us forward-focused and screen-attached, radio asks something different of us: to listen.
In my sessions, I often invite people to close their eyes “to see”, and to let the whole body listen. If you choose to tune into this conversation, perhaps you might do the same.
an incredible reflective exploration on the textures and sensory experiences within custodial settings, with a focus on sound and its impact on our wellbeing...
