Hi, I’m Hannah! I’m a physiotherapist with 15 years experience, the past 10 years specialising in treating children and adolescents with a range of musculoskeletal conditions.
I have worked with children of all ages from those who are just starting to exercise, through to others competing at a national level, across a range of sports and activities.
Children are not mini adults- they are constantly developing and present with a range of issues often related to their stage of growth. Additionally they have pressures of squad selection, juggling of multiple sports/ fixtures, friends, school...etc!
For children who have pain or an injury a detailed assessment and consideration of the child as a whole is the key to successful treatment.
My assessments include:
· A thorough discussion of general health, lifestyle and activity levels
· Specialist assessment and diagnosis of the problem
· Checking for any other orthopaedic conditions that can appear in childhood (such as scoliosis and hip problems)
· Education on the diagnosis (every child should have an age appropriate understanding of what is causing them pain/ difficulty)
· A treatment plan (made with the child so that it fits with their lifestyle as much as possible)
I am a passionate believer in preventative medicine. A large proportion of the pain and injuries seen in children is related to growth and very often could have been avoided. Growth should not be painful! Through targeted stretching and conditioning work the risk of pain and injury can be minimised and healthy habits for life can be established. For children aiming to progress in their chosen sports these principles can be applied to help them improve aspects of their overall performance.
In addition to the assessment and treatment of pain/injuries, I also offer ‘Injury Prevention Screening’:
· A thorough discussion of general health, lifestyle and activity levels
· ‘top to toe’ assessment (screening for orthopaedic conditions in children, looking at movement patterns, muscle length, muscle strength, balance and coordination)
· Personalised injury prevention programme (includes exercise programme, lifestyle advice, training modification)
· Performance improvement strategies (where appropriate)
