Hiya! I'm Rachel, and I'm the Conductor behind Conductive Education with Rachel Short.

For over 15 years, I've had the joy of working with children who have additional needs.

I believe in looking at the whole child, and that learning should be in a supportive and caring environment.

A few pictures from a wonderful Conductive Education session this morning.

We had a fabulous time completing a sitting programme, practicing independent sitting, playing with the Sloth and a fishing game.

Conductive Education is a holistic learning method, find out about its unique approach

The Core Elements:
The Conductor: We are the qualified specialists, unique combination of educator and therapist, guiding your child's learning journey and facilitating their development.
The Group: A supportive environment where children motivate each other, develop vital social skills, and where families connect.
The Daily Routine: A carefully planned timetable of tasks (not exercises!) tailored to the child's age and ability, ensuring every session is functional and flexible.
Task Series: Small, achievable, functional movements (lying, sitting, standing) that teach the child to intend, plan, and execute actions consciously.
The Learning Process:
Rhythmical Intention: The use of specific language, counting, or songs (e.g., "I bend my left leg...") to provide a time structure for movement. This aids communication and control!
Facilitation & Observation: We use verbal prompts and guidance to support learning, while constant observation tracks progress and refines goals.
The Learning Environment: A supportive space designed to build motivation, encourage success, and promote the transfer of learned skills into everyday life.
We work simultaneously to develop motor skills, communication, social skills, play, and sensory needs.

Conductive Education (CE) is a unique and specialised method of learning, and because it's still not very well known, I would love it if you could help me spread the word across the North East!

I truly believe its holistic learning method could help support a lot of children and families right here in Durham, and across the North East who are looking for a unique approach.

Why Share about CE?

It's Unique: CE is about learning, not just treatment. We build problem-solving skills and focus on developing their personality.

It's Holistic: We work on gross motor, fine motor, communication, and educational goals all at once.

If you know a parent, carer or group who would benefit from Conductive Education please share to help a family discover an approach that could unlock their child's potential. Thank you so much for your support!

Find out why we say task instead of exercise in Conductive Education.

Conductive Education is about Learning, not treatment.

That’s why we use the word Task!
The core of CE is Learning, not Treatment.

The structured Task Series in Conductive Education is about so much more than movement.

They holistically integrate the physical with the cognitive, emotional, and social.
When a child completes a task, they're not just moving a limb—they're actively learning the strategy to gain independence in an everyday, meaningful activity. It’s a complete system of learning!

CE is not an exercise programme. It's an empowering educational approach.

My Floristry Journey! 💐

I'm so proud to share a little snapshot of some of the work I've been doing for my Level 2 Floristry course!

As much as I love my role as a Conductor, taking time out to learn a new skill and do something creative is so important for recharging. It's a great reminder that learning never stops, no matter what age we are!

It's definitely been a learning curve (and not quite as easy as it looks!), but I'm loving seeing the progress.

What do you like to do to recharge?

I spend a lot of time traveling between home visits, school sessions, and group sessions across Durham and the Northeast, and I love using that time to listen to a Podcast.

I'm always looking for new suggestions for the drive, comment below any suggestions!
