PART 2 | Investigators learn that having a 15-year-old at the controls wasn't the only factor in the crash of Flight 593.

No one in the cockpit knew that in this new Airbus, part of the auto-pilot would disconnect if the control column was turned against the autopilot and no alarm sounded. The pilots also weren't trained properly to recover from a dangerous situation.

The tragic accident of Flight 593 changed the way pilots were trained on the new Airbus and forced the aviation industry to give pilots a better understanding of how to recover from so-called "upset" situations.

Season 3 Episode 10 "Kid In The Cockpit": On March 23, 1994, Russain International Airlines Flight 593 left Moscow's Airport to Hong Kong. The captain's children were on board and whilst the captain and co-pilot had the plane running on autopilot, they invited the children into the cockpit. After the son sat down, the plane began banking steeply and started falling from the sky in a wild corkscrew spin. The son was trapped in the pilot's position. When the captain managed to get back into his seat, it was too late. Flight 593 crashed into the snowy mountains of Siberia and everyone on board was killed.

PART 1 | On March 23, 1994, Russian International Airlines Flight 593 left Moscow's Airport to Hong Kong. The Captain's children were also on board and shortly after takeoff, he invited them into the cockpit which triggered a series of disastrous events.

The captain and co-pilot had the plane running on autopilot when they invited the teenagers to take turns "flying" the state of the art aircraft. Soon after the son sat down, the plane began banking steeply even though the autopilot was still on. While the crew struggled desperately to figure out what was wrong, the situation went from bad to worse. The plane began turning more and more steeply and then started falling from the sky in a wild corkscrew spin. The son was trapped in the pilot's position.

The captain eventually managed to get back into his seat but it was too late. Flight 593 crashed into the snowy mountains of Siberia and everyone on board was killed. Do you think the captain's children being invited into the cockpit was the primary reason for this air disaster? Come back for Part 2 on Wednesday!

Are you able to work out how the captain got stuck to the outside of the plane onboard flight 5390?

From Season 2 Episode 1 "Blow Out": June 10, 1990 – the 84 passengers boarding British Airways Flight 111 in Birmingham, England, are in a festive mood. Many are headed to Malaga, Spain for a Mediterranean vacation. The plane takes off without a hitch but within minutes something goes horribly wrong. A loud bang is heard from the cockpit and the cabin immediately fills with fog. The front windshield has completely blown off, sucking the captain through the opening.

The plane is flying at an altitude of 17 000 feet. Captain Tim Lancaster is plastered to the outside of the plane, his legs tangled in the control column, which is the only reason he hasn’t hurtled off into the sky. But the captain’s feet have also pushed the plane’s controls forward into a steep dive.

The co-pilot, Alastair Atchinson, is in a desperate situation. This is his first time in the cockpit of this particular plane, and the first time he’s worked with the crew. The captain is three-quarters of the way out of the cockpit, now being held around the ankles by Nigel Ogden, a flight attendant. A 400-mph wind is blowing through the cockpit, taking all the charts with it. Atchinson can’t halt the plane’s dive because the demolished cockpit door covers the throttles. And though he is shouting for help from air traffic control, he can’t hear their replies because the wind noise is deafening. All this in one of the busiest air lanes in Europe!

But if they let his lifeless body go it will be sucked into the engine and bring the plane down. Passengers in the aisle seats have a disturbingly direct view of all of this, and panic begins to sweep the cabin.

The failure of the operation of AF8969 provided valuable lessons for the architects of 9/11!

From Season 2 Episode 3 "Killing Machine": 9/11 took the world by surprise. We asked how could it have happened.

On Christmas Eve in 1994, an Airbus carrying 177 people and 15 tons of highly flammable jet fuel exploded over Paris. Burning debris rains down on the City of Light, setting fire to everything in its wake. It’s a catastrophic precursor to 9/11… Only it never happened!

That was the plan, however, Flight AF8969 was taken over as the Airbus was getting ready for take-off from Algiers to Paris. Algeria was in a state of civil war. Negotiations commenced but were met by a blank refusal by the Algerian military government to make any concessions. The Algerian authorities refused to remove the air-stairs attached to the plane and allow it to leave Algiers. In retaliation, a passenger was killed and the body was dumped! The Algerian authorities were unmoved. A second passenger was killed. And then a third…
