A Bird in the Hand Project

A Bird in the Hand Project A Bird in the Hand Project ~ making & selling tiny little birds, raising funds for refugees across Europe.

But what?

Watching the tragic events of 2015 unfold upon the beaches of Greece and spread through Europe, Jane and Anna, from the comfort of their seaside homes, felt they had to do something to help. Both Anna and Jane are very creative ladies, who happen to be pretty handy with a needle and thread... and so the concept of sewing for the greater good was born! They teamed up with Hastings Supports Refugees, a group Jane had helped set up earlier in the year, to put on a bird making workshop. Birds are often seen as symbols of hope and peace and so they were the perfect choice of mascot. Our volunteers rallied to make the tiny little birds, that are just big enough to fit in the palms and pockets of the refugee children and, hopefully, provide comfort as they make their long and difficult journeys to safety. The response to the Workshop was overwhelming and the result was a huge box of birds being sent off to Lesvos. And so the idea grew wings... and became A Bird in the Hand Project. As well as bird-making workshops, we have put together make-your-own kits, with the help of volunteers, that we sell for £5. The money generated will be used to provide art therapy kits for refugees and help bolster Hastings Supports Refugees' work, responding to the many emergencys generated by this crisis. If you would like to be involved, or would like to buy a kit then please get in touch! The Bird in the Hand Project Team

Two subjects very close to our hearts, stitching and Refugees.

Own any unwanted buttons, thread or fabric that could do with a new home?

We are setting up our very first tailoring therapy group for male refugees living with post traumatic stress disorder. This group will offer people a space to socialise in a creative environment and focus on something besides their day to day challenges.

But we need your help! We're in very short supply of buttons, thread and fabrics and would really appreciate donations. Please email Marj.Watson@RefugeeCouncil.org.uk to find out the best way of getting them to us. Thank you for your help.

A message from St John's Church, Pevensey Road:

WELCOMING THE STRANGER: Could or would you offer accommodation to Refugees (single or a couple, no children) with recent “Leave to Remain” in the UK? Tony Cox is asking if you could join him and a group of local Christians to form a register of households that can provide short and if willing longer term bedsits or small flats for matched refugees. They will usually have Local Housing Allowance to pay for their housing after acquiring an NI number. Help will be given with the initial practicalities. Further details from Tony Cox.

A huge flock of little birds landed at La La La La Rookh Workshop this week. Keep them coming guys, they make little children in difficult times very happy. These ones are all destined to go into busy bags for children in hospitals in Syria.

Today the people if Hastings presented an open letter to our MP, Amber Rudd the Home Secretary, calling upon her to act now to bring the unaccompanied children of the Calais Camp to the UK and safety.
Please feel free to share our post, we want the message to travel far and wide.
