At Cherry Lane Therapeutic Children’s Homes, we use the Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) approach as part of our in-house staff training and development.

NVR supports our staff to work calmly and consistently with young people, particularly where there are experiences of trauma, distress or harmful behaviour. The focus on adult presence and teamwork aligns closely with our therapeutic approach and values.

We are pleased to support the upcoming Accredited NVR Foundation Level I training taking place in March 2026. The course is suitable for professionals working with children and young people across residential care, social care, education and therapeutic settings.

Cherry Lane Director Kerry Shoesmith, held a training event in October with Dr Peter Jakob in NVR, Foundation training. They shall be hosting this event again in May. Here are the details;

NVR training gives professionals practical tools to reduce escalation and increase calm, steady adult presence.

We will be running our NVR Foundation Training in Eastbourne this March. The course offers a structured introduction to NVR for professionals working with children, young people and families. It focuses on approaches that can be used immediately in day-to-day practice.

The training is delivered by Kerry Shoesmith and Dr Peter Jakob. Sessions include presentations, discussion and practice-based learning.

Therapists, care workers, social workers, psychologists, nurses, psychiatrists, and lived-experience practitioners have integrated NVR into their work after training with Kerry and Peter. The course is designed for professionals supporting young people showing harmful or self-destructive behaviour and their families.

As we near the end of the year, November has been another busy and rewarding month at Cherry Lane!

🍒 Training & Development
Our commitment to continuous learning remains strong, with staff taking part in a range of training sessions throughout the month. These have helped strengthen skills, deepen understanding, and ensure our teams continue to deliver exceptional therapeutic care.

🍒 Group Processing
We’ve continued our reflective group processing meetings, offering a valuable space for staff to share experiences, support one another, and grow together. These sessions truly highlight the heart of Cherry Lane — teamwork, reflection, and care.

🍒 Team Spirit & Growth
Our new staff members are doing amazing, bringing enthusiasm, compassion, and fresh ideas to their roles. It’s been wonderful to see how well everyone is working together — supporting one another and creating a positive, nurturing atmosphere across the homes.

🍒 Therapeutic Support
Our Director continues to offer one-to-one therapy sessions, providing personalised support to help staff reflect, build resilience, and maintain their own well-being.

The Christmas Party is officially booked, and the excitement is already building! It’s a lovely opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate an incredible year of progress and teamwork.
