Ok ok, I am completely guilty for not posting since April! How time flies! My right side is so good, and I'm so so pleased I had the PAO surgery in November '17. I guess I haven't posted because there's honestly times when I forget I have 3 screws in my pelvis! My pain levels are minimal on my right side, and I've even been able to do regular exercise classes over the last few months!

The inevitable has happened, having bilateral hip dysplasia means I'm writing this with a hot water bottle on my left hip and a dose of Zapain in me. I'm currently listening to Radio 6 while reading through my information pack for my LPAO which will take place on 14th February. Yes I love my surgeon so much I've chosen to spend Valentines Day at the hospital!

How is everyone?! I'll try to keep my posts more regular now I've remembered you're still here!

Firstly, apologies for not keeping you updated lately. Managing a full time job, while also being self employed and having chronic pain is difficult (but not impossible).

Work has been hectic and I walk an average of 8500 steps a day. I lift heavy cameras and am constantly crouching down/reaching high. I think it’s actually helped strengthen my muscles a bit.

Baring in mind I had my RPAO in November, I’m amazed that I’m almost back to normal. Daily, I walk to the station and back, work a full time day and I survive. That said, I don’t go anywhere without Co-codamol, ibuprofen gel and my Paingone Plus pen. I don’t take many co-codamol though.

I have twinges of pain through my hip, but it already feels better than pre-op. My real pain however is in my operation side shin. I’m still waiting on my ‘emergency’ MRI scan results back, however my physio released a muscle that runs down my shin on Friday. It hurt like hell, but I’m thinking it’s shin splints as it hasn’t lessened in the slightest! (Its far worse than my hip).

Hydrotherapy was great, although I’m a little gutted that I only got 4 sessions on the NHS. They were really valuable and I think they’ve helped my range of movement by far. I’m planning on taking myself to the local pool once a week and doing the same exercises.

The recovery from a PAO is by far not the easiest. It tests your patience while making you question what you did to deserve so much pain. But soon, it will get better!

This week has been crazy! I haven’t seen thick snow for a while and had some annual leave earlier on in the week. On the last day of annual leave I managed to slip on an icy snow covered basement window but luckily I think I’ve only hurt my head and my pride! You really do see yourself in slow motion when you know you’re going to hit the deck with three screws in your pelvis!

I also had my second hydro session this week. If I could live in that pool I would, although this last session was a little noisy. You’ve probably learned by now that everything in my life contains a little drama, and this was no different, the fire alarm went off while I was in the pool! The hydro team were great and carried on teaching throughout the ten minutes of squealing. I found hydro relaxing the first time but I had too many visions of having to stand outside in my costume in the snow this time around... 😂

I’m currently on my way to UCLH for an MRI on my shin. I have a very odd pain and am just having it checked out. Getting into London for the morning on a Sunday is so difficult on the trains - with lots of rail replacements and delays.

So here I am 16 weeks PAO free from crutches and taking no regular pain relief. I’m working full time, can drive and ride a bike. On day one I really would have laughed at you if you told me that I’d be doing these things

My hip is healing incredibly well. Calluses forming along the osteotomy lines. 👍🏻👍🏻. I need to work on strengthening those muscles though! Annoyingly we can’t pin point pain in my shin so I’m off for another MRI in the next few weeks. 🤦🏻‍♀️😩😂.

Apologies for not posting for a while. It was my 21st birthday yesterday, and I haven’t stopped!

My pain has been up and down like a yo-yo. On Saturday I went to central London for breakfast and shopping. Being Ms Stubborn, I refused to bring my crutch. I just wanted a day without the clicking of the ferrules against the tarmac. The first couple of hours were great. I got to feel like a ‘normal’ person. After that both hips started to really nag and then I struggled to lift my feet off the ground without intense pain. We had a nice day but we did leave early because I was so exhausted and hurting by early afternoon. It’s a strong reminder that I’m still early on in recovering from the PAO, nearly 14 weeks post surgery.

I’m back to one crutch and feeling ok. I have a dull ache but nothing like pre op pain. My pre op side is still aching quite badly and I know that very soon that will have to be done too.

On Friday I have a physio appointment as well as a follow up with my fantastic consultant and his registrar. That’ll be another X-Ray to add to my collection. I was thinking about requesting all my X-rays since I was a child and making some art with them - why not? 😂

Next week I have my first hydrotherapy appointment. I’m quite apprehensive about it but I’ve heard many people get great results so it’s worth a try.

I’ll keep you updated.

Hip Dysplasia. Not just for dogs...

This page was set up by a young person undergoing treatment to correct bilateral hip dysplasia. Lauren underwent a successful peri-acetabular osteotomy (PAO) of the right hip in 2017 to fix one side, and is now waiting for the other side to be corrected.

About me

I was diagnosed from a young age, treated surgically with an open reduction and fitted in a hip spica cast as a baby. Doctors assured my parents that my hips had been fixed and I went through bi-annual X-Rays up to primary school age to make sure everything remained fine.

In my early teenage years she developed intense pain in both hips, which was often diagnosed by doctors as ‘growing pains’ despite my hip dysplasia diagnoses as an infant. Doctors always made me feel as if I was being dramatic about the intense pain I was in.
