Six weeks left to share your views!

Edinburgh residents are being asked to give their views on a safer drug consumption facility (SDCF).

Until 1 July, people can take part in the SDCF survey – a place where problem drug users can consume drugs with medical supervision. There is no site agreed, but two areas of the Old Town are being considered.

The nursing team at Royston Court Care Home were named as runners up at prestigious nursing awards.

The team, based in the Granton care home, were nominated for their exceptional dedication, compassion, and professionalism in delivering high-quality, person-centred care to residents.

The judges noted that since nurses were introduced to the care home three years ago, bringing together NHS and City of Edinburgh Council staff, the team has demonstrated outstanding resilience, adaptability, and teamwork, particularly in challenging circumstances.

The team has achieved measurable outcomes, including a 50% reduction in falls and hospital attendances, a 60% reduction in GP visits, and the release of 20–30 hours of district nursing time back into the community each week.

They were named as runners up in the Care Home Nursing Award at a glittering awards ceremony at the National Museum of Scotland on 30 April. The awards recognise exceptional staff and teams in nursing and social care and were judged by a team of experts.

An Edinburgh care home resident was left ‘buzzing’ after meeting actor Ralf Little.

Paul Austin, (79) who lives in Castlegreen Care Home, ran by the Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership, loves author John Le Carre and frequently talks about the plots of his favourite spy books with staff.

Amy, an activity leader in the home, discovered one of the author’s books had been turned into a play and was showing at The Festival Theatre. She booked them tickets for The Spy Who Came in from the Cold’s matinee performance and they went last week.

Amy said: “Paul was absolutely delighted and was thrilled I hadn’t read the book so didn’t know what was to come.

“At the interval, we overheard people saying that if you went to the stage door after the performance you could possibly meet the actors. I looked over at Paul and saw his mischievous grin, so we set off after the show to try our luck.

“And soon after, Ralf Little appeared. He was absolutely lovely and chatted with Paul about the show, the books and theatre life for about 20 minutes.”

Ralf even signed Paul’s theatre tickets and posed for photos.

Amy added: “The day out was a real highlight for us both and it was incredible to share something so special with Paul. He is a great resident and so passionate about theatre.”

Christine Laverty, chief officer for Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership said: “We were thrilled to learn of one of our care home members of staff going above and beyond for a resident.

“Our workforce is our biggest asset and make a real difference to people lives every single day.”

All adult social care workers working for Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership will now be paid the Real Living Wage.

All workers, no matter if they are staff, contractors or individuals receiving direct payments, will be paid £13.45 per hour.

Christine Laverty, chief officer of Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “Paying the Real Living Wage is more important than ever, with the cost of living continuing to rise and some of the worst affected by relative poverty are those in work.

"By paying a fair wage, we can help workers find routes out of poverty.”
