There is a LOT more to the history of Reiki than this, but I have done my best to summarise the origin story!
First of all, a quick look at the word itself:
In Japanese, REI means 'universal' or 'spiritual consciousness', or 'soul'. KI means 'vital energy' (like 'qi' in Chinese or 'prana' in Sanskrit).
Therefore REIKI is often translated to something like "Universal life force energy."
Now for the story:
Reiki originated in Japan. The story goes that, in 1922, Usui Sensei, a Bhuddist practitioner and healer, undertook a 21-day meditation retreat on Mount Kurama. Towards the end of this retreat he had an enlightenment experience, during which he became attuned to Reiki energy. When he returned to his community, Usui Sensei founded "Usui Reiki Ryoho" - the healing art of channeling the sacred energy of the universe.
Usui passed on the attunement to Reiki energy to 20 of his students who, in turn, became teachers. After his death in 1926, his students continued to pass on the attunement to others. This is how Reiki is taught to this day, and each Reiki practitioner can trace their lineage back to Usui Sensei.
There is a lot of speculation and
mis-information about Reiki. If you are interested in learning more, I recommend this book:
'An Evidence Based History of Reiki' by William Lee Rand (2015).
