🌟 NEW BLOG POST 🌟

"New home, new knee, new year, new blog"

When working with organisations and colleagues, I always talk about the importance of having 'non-negotiables' in your life which are just for you, and your own happiness and wellbeing. It is crucial we make the time to do something on a regular basis which is just for us.

Learn more about this, as well as some personal news, in my latest NewbyCore Blog.

What are your non-negotiables?

When life gets busy (when is it not!?) one of the things I enjoy that I don't find the time to do, is writing and creating. I love doing podcasts, writing articles and basically creating content that I enjoy doing, and that hopefully some people find either inspiring, informative or at the very leas...

What an amazing achievement by Michelle Brown - a true inspiration, especially throughout the challenging last couple of years.

I cannot recommend this networking event enough - if you haven’t already done so, sign up for one of these soon. You won’t be disappointed!!

This month Love Your Business networking club is 4!

Up until February 2020 I was running these at Black Ivy Bar & Hotel and thanks to help from Ian Pilbeam, Director of HR Dept Edinburgh, Mid and East Lothian and Scott Newby, founder of NewbyCore - Experts in Mental Health at Work - I got it up and running online quickly after news of the first lockdown – and never missed a month since!

Both Ian and Scott were my first online speakers in March 2020. Ian, as always, was going the extra mile to help so many companies during the early days of covid with all things HR related and crisis support.

Every day he’d post invaluable updates, which he continues to do, including furloughing facts and the Job Retention Scheme – it was an honour to have him at the first online event.

It was great to have Scott too at the first online event who specialises in mental health first aid training and talked about the importance of looking after ourselves during these uncertain times.

He shared great advice on trying to create some kind of routine when working from home, tips on getting the balance right and taking time out for yourself - all still very important when running a business. Thanks again Scott and Ian for being long time supporters of Love Your Business.

Thank you to all of the wonderful speakers who have given up their time over the years to share their stories and to the great bunch of attendees who come along every month.

I would never have imagined we’d still be running these online but it feels right for now. One day we’ll go back to face-to-face networking and kickstart it with a big celebration! Until then we’ll continue to run them via Zoom on the last Thursday of every month with more brilliant speakers and great opportunities to network in the breakout rooms.

The next event is on Thursday the 27th January, 11am till 12noon. Tickets are £5 plus booking fee. https://bit.ly/3yJrlg0

Over the years 50% of ticket sales and PR support has been donated to a charity / community partner, including Make 2nds Count, Support in Mind Scotland and last year, Invisible Cities – our new 2022 charity partner will be announced soon.

To celebrate our 4th anniversary, four people have the chance to win a pair of tickets for the next event.

All you have to do is email michelle@michellebrownpr.com and tell me about someone who has really inspired you and why.

Winners will be picked at random on the 20th January at 5pm.

A new kind of blog post on our website...over the next 4 weeks, each Tuesday a new academic blog post in relation to Psychology will go live.

Some blog posts I have worked on based on some of the areas I have studied so far in my Psychology degree.

Might not be for everyone...but in my opinion, they are very interesting pieces!!! And pretty short! :)

First one is now live - would love to get your thoughts on it?

Gestalt Psychology and the Theory of Perception. A common phrase we hear is ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.’ This will often be said of a team at work or in sport…but is this the case or is the whole just different from the sum of its parts?

Ever wondered why music evokes memories and how powerful this can be?

Music can also influence our mood...so I have two questions for you:

1. If you have had a tough day at work, what music do you play to improve your mood?
2. And...why is it, we can hear a song from 20 years ago and miraculously we sing-a-long knowing every word!?!?

Songs from the past can trigger powerful emotions and transport us back in time.

Reinventing the workplace.

Post Covid, it is unlikely that the way we work will ever be the same again. And whilst Covid has obviously been, and continues to be, a terrible thing that we all wish had never existed...hopefully from a 'how we work' perspective, greater focus will be given to this and the importance of each individual.

It is easy to say that flexible working or/and blended working (some days at home/others on site) seems like a good way forward, however, putting this in to practice is less easy.

With any change, this will impact on everybody differently, and often the success of such change is not always 'what' the change is, but 'how' the change is made.

For example, two organisations could implement the exact same flexible working approach, but dependant on how this is communicated and delivered, this could be received very differently.

For many industries, now is the time to be thinking about the new way of working. In some ways, it creates a blank canvas, and at NewbyCore we love a blank canvas! If you are looking for help on the best way forward, don't hesitate to give me a shout.

Whatever the setting or reason, it is always okay to ask for help.

In fact, it has such positive benefits for both the person asking and the person being asked. Not to mention the joy of human interaction this brings...something which we appreciate more than ever now.

Please check out my latest blog post on my own experience of learning to ask for help:

Great article with Keith Anderson of Vialex.

So very true - we are all different, some colleagues like working from home, others like working, well, at work and some will prefer a bit of both.

Lots of factors to consider, but the starting point has to be asking and then listening to staff.

Logistically this will bring its challenges but is worth the investment and flexibility to find an approach which is fluid and serves both the staff and the organisation.

A student of colleague experience and operational excellence, I also have a guilty pleasure in that I enjoy a good excel spreadsheet! Shh, don't tell anyone...

Balancing colleague wishes and business needs requires strong communication, capacity planning skills, people focused approach and also commercial awareness. Sounds painful right!? The good news is this is an area we specialise in (and actually enjoy!), so save yourself a few headaches and give me a shout to find out how we can help.

As offices around the country begin to reopen, staff concerns must be listened to by employers, according to Keith Anderson, chief executive of Edinburgh-based legal services firm Vialex.

Love this!

A great way to encourage people to feel comfortable talking about their mental health and enjoying the benefits of being outdoors.

As the nights begin to draw in...the importance of taking a lunch break and getting some daylight and fresh air increases.

5 Tips To Steer Clear Of The 2021 Sharply Rising Burnout Epidemic

Food for thought...what are you doing to proactively manage your stress levels and to ensure a positive work/life balance?

New trends show workplace burnout at epidemic proportions with 70% of burnt out employees poised to leave current jobs. Here are five must-know tips for employees and employers to avoid this trend.

The dream job!

Great to see football clubs taking a more proactive and holistic approach to the mental health and emotional wellbeing of their employees.

Although the deadline for this role has now passed, this is an exciting development which will see many more football clubs follow suit.

Mental Health and Football...my two passions...would love to work with football clubs in the future on this hugely important topic.

Well done Tottenham

TOTTENHAM are advertising for their first Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Manager to “drive workforce awareness and development about mental health and embed it into all aspects of the business.”

"Be yourself as a leader - there are many ways to be a great leader but they all have one thing in common, authenticity"

Many years ago when on a leadership programme with my previous employer, a trainer from Warwick Business School made the above statement. This really hit home with me - until that point, as a young leader I had lots of doubts about my leadership style - do I need to behave differently, which other leaders can I imitate and so on.

This was the moment I realised my leadership style is the best leadership style I can have, because I am not trying to be anyone else but myself - I had authenticity and people respected that.

Of course we can learn from others and evolve through experience BUT to stay authentic it is about being the best leader you can be based on who you truly are.

This thought was triggered today by an article I was reading with interest about a new captain bringing a new leadership style - one which is more empathetic and focused on emotional wellbeing...I look forward to watching his journey with the All Blacks.

Ardie Savea will captain New Zealand for the first time next Sunday when the All Blacks face Australia in their Rugby Championship Test at Optus Stadium in Perth.

The power of communication. Never underestimate the impact your words and actions can have - good or bad.

We might not all be famous tennis players, but we all have people who look up to us.

Like many others, I was so pleased to see Emma Raducanu win the US Open on Saturday. On and off the court she has been an absolute credit to herself, and an inspiration to others.

It got me thinking...that perhaps some of the supporting cast to this achievement has been the honesty and openness of the likes of Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles?

Trailblazing comes in many forms and the bravery of those in the public eye, talking about their own mental health challenges, can help others to not only strive for success but also to put greater focus on their own mental wellbeing.
