We were proud to welcome First Minister John Swinney to the Haematology service at the Western General Hospital, where he saw first-hand how charitable funding has transformed the unit into a modern, patient-centred space. Staff shared how the refurbishment is enabling new ways of delivering care, including cutting-edge treatments like CAR-T therapy 🧬

We also welcomed newly appointed Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Angela Constance, to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for her first official visit. Touring the Command Centre, orthopaedics ward and Emergency Department, she heard directly from staff about how real-time data, innovative technology, and collaborative working are improving patient flow and outcomes.

From robotic-assisted surgery delivering millimetre precision to smarter use of data to manage demand, our teams are leading the way in transforming patient care👏

A pioneering kidney preservation machine has been used for the first time in Scotland at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh 💙

The technology helps keep donor kidneys healthier for longer, giving transplant teams more flexibility and helping improve outcomes for patients.

James, the first patient to benefit, is already recovering well and headed home just days after surgery.

A powerful step forward for transplantation in Scotland👏

❗Don’t forget to tune into BBC Two tonight at 9pm as NHS Lothian features in the new series of Surgeons: At the Edge of Life 📺

At the Royal Infirmary, surgeons undertake an extraordinary procedure, temporarily draining a patient’s blood to replace severely damaged arteries. Meanwhile at the Western General Hospital, a patient’s fertility hangs in the balance without a complex operation to remove diseased bowel.
