Andy Connell, one of our optoms, was attempting to complete the West Highland Way over 2 days in part with Vision Scotland to raise funds for sight-saving surgery

Each year, Vision Scotland, organises an event where participants can undertake a section of WHW, between Fort William and Tyndrum, up to 44 miles. This year, Andy (with the company of his brother James), decided to up the ante and challenged themselves to do the whole route in just 2 days. After nearly 25 hours and 87 miles, they had to stop as they had run out of time and feet would go no further. All in all though, a great weekend in very good company and perfect weather to take in the stunning views along the way

Who knows, after a well-earned rest maybe thoughts will turn to attempt #2 in 2025!

The money raised is used to fund surgery for those in dire need but unable to be receive the surgery through the NHS. It is used to cover the concrete costs of cataract surgery. The surgeons and clinical support team provide their time free of charge

Common eye problems affecting babies and children that can be detected during eye tests:
👓 lazy eye (amblyopia) – where the vision in one eye does not develop properly
👓 squint (strabismus) – where the eyes look in different directions
👓 short-sightedness (myopia) – where distant objects appear blurred, while close objects can be seen clearly
👓 long-sightedness (hyperopia) – where you can see distant objects clearly but nearby objects are out of focus
👓 astigmatism – where the front of the eye (cornea) is not perfectly curved so objects distance and nearby may be out of focus
Children can have an eye (sight) test at any age. They do not need to be able to read, or even speak. A sight test is particularly important if there is a history of childhood eye problems, such as squint or lazy eye, in your family
