Everyone feels down from time to time, but depression is more than that. When you are depressed your low mood can last for weeks at a time. While mild depression might not stop you from living your life, severe depression can make you feel suicidal and unable to function normally.
It is thought that between 3 and 7 people out of every 100 will experience depression every year.
Common symptoms of Depression include.
Loss of interest/pleasure in things you used to enjoy.
Feeling fatigued or tired.
Sleeping too much/too little.
Feeling worthless, guilty or self critical.
Feeling indecisive.
Eating too much/too little.
Thinking of death or su***de often/harming yourself.
Feeling indecisive or unable to concentrate.
Feeling fidgety, unable to sit still/moving and speaking slower than normal.
Feeling dejected/down most of the time.

There is no single cause for depression. There are many reasons why someone may be more vulnerable to developing depression.
I will discuss the predisposing factors for depression in a future post.

The good news is that there are many effective psychological and medical treatments for depression.

Menopause is when your ovaries stop producing eggs and levels of hormones, Oestrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone fall. The clinical definition of menopause is when you have gone twelve consecutive months without a period.

The Perimenopause is a time of transition directly before that, when hormone levels start to reduce. Your periods may still be regular or can change in nature or frequency.
You may also begin to experience an array of both physical and mental health problems for the first time which can be very alarming and distressing, particularly if you are not aware that these symptoms are due to declining hormones 😕
These symptoms can include...
Anxiety & Panic attacks
Depression
Mood swings
Tearfulness
Irritability
Anger/rage
Palpitations
Night sweats
Hot/cold flushes
Poor sleep
Exhaustion
Headaches
Joint & muscle pain
IBS
Reflux
Tinnitus
Dizziness etc!
There are a total of 34 different symptoms that a women may experience during this transition. 😳
The average age of menopause is 51 and perimenopause tends to begin in your early to mid 40s. However, I see multiple women beginning this transition in their mid to late 30s.

HRT can be a very effective treatment for managing the symptoms of peri/menopause. However, not all women can or want to take hormones, therefore Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can also be very effective treatment for helping women manage the anxiety/Mood symptoms as well as hot flushes and poor sleep.

This time in a womens life can be very isolating and distressing. Please reach out if you are struggling.

Myself and will be running a menopause workshop beginning in August to help educate and empower women to transition through this time in their lives with ease.
Tickets will be available on soon.
Please drop me an email if you would like to know more about the upcoming workshops or booking a CBT session with me or .

Symptoms of PTSD

After an experience of trauma, it is common to experience unwanted memories and disruptions in arousal, but people with PTSD find that these experiences persist. PTSD is experienced by 3 - 5 people out of every 100, but unlike many anxiety disorders, it is under - diagnosed and often goes unrecognised.

Symptoms include the following.
Intrusion symptoms associated with the traumatic event, such as.....
Recurrent distressing dreams, flashbacks, psychological distress when exposed to internal/external cue that symbolise or resemble an aspect of the event.

Persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with the traumatic event, such as......
Avoidance of distressing memories, thoughts or feelings associated with the event.
Avoidance of people, places, conversations, activities, objects or situations that arouse distressing memories associated with the event.

Negative alterations in cognitions and mood associated with the traumatic event, such as.....
Negative emotional state.
Distorted cognitions, such as blaming self for the event.
Persistent negative beliefs or expectations about oneself, others or the world.
Inability to experience happiness, satisfaction or loving feelings.

Alterations in reactivity and arousal, such as.......
Irritable and angry behaviour.
Aggression towards others.
Hypervigilance.
Exaggerated startle response
Problems with sleep and concentration.

Both CBT & EMDR therapies are highly effective treatments for PTSD.
Please get in touch if you'd like to know more about the treatments for PTSD.

Many of us will experience trauma at some point in our lives. With time, most people recover from their experiences without needing professional help. However, for a significant proportion of people the effects of trauma last much longer, and they develop a condition called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is thought that 3 and 5 people out of every 100 will experience PTSD every year.

When something dangerous happens, it's normal (and helpful) to feel a sense of threat - this focuses your attention on trying to get safe. The puzzle of PTSD is that people continue to feel that they are under threat, even after the danger has passed. This can be very intense and frightening.
Fortunately there are an excellent range of psychological therapies available for PTSD.
Both EMDR and CBT can be highly effective treatments for PTSD.

Please get in touch for more information regarding treatments available for PTSD.

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach designed for working with distressing or traumatic memories. The theory behind EMDR is that many psychological difficulties are the result of distressing life experiences which have not been stored in memory properly and are said to be unprocessed or blocked. These traumatic memories may need some help to become processed, and EMDR helps to facilitate this.

There is very good evidence that EMDR is an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is recommended by the National institute for Health and Care Exellence (NICE, UK) as an effective treatment for PTSD.

Please get in touch, if you would like more information about EMDR therapy.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a popular, evidenced - based form of psychological therapy. It is an effective form of treatment for a wide variety of psychological conditions. One of the basic messages of CBT is that "what you think and do affects the way you feel". And how (well intentioned) behaviours often result in unintended consequences.
CBT is about finding out what is keeping us 'stuck' and making changes in our thinking and actions in order to improve the way you feel.

CBT can be highly effective at treating all types of anxiety disorders, trauma, depression and menopause.

For more information, please get in touch.
