Symptoms of PTSD
After an experience of trauma, it is common to experience unwanted memories and disruptions in arousal, but people with PTSD find that these experiences persist. PTSD is experienced by 3 - 5 people out of every 100, but unlike many anxiety disorders, it is under - diagnosed and often goes unrecognised.
Symptoms include the following.
Intrusion symptoms associated with the traumatic event, such as.....
Recurrent distressing dreams, flashbacks, psychological distress when exposed to internal/external cue that symbolise or resemble an aspect of the event.
Persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with the traumatic event, such as......
Avoidance of distressing memories, thoughts or feelings associated with the event.
Avoidance of people, places, conversations, activities, objects or situations that arouse distressing memories associated with the event.
Negative alterations in cognitions and mood associated with the traumatic event, such as.....
Negative emotional state.
Distorted cognitions, such as blaming self for the event.
Persistent negative beliefs or expectations about oneself, others or the world.
Inability to experience happiness, satisfaction or loving feelings.
Alterations in reactivity and arousal, such as.......
Irritable and angry behaviour.
Aggression towards others.
Hypervigilance.
Exaggerated startle response
Problems with sleep and concentration.
Both CBT & EMDR therapies are highly effective treatments for PTSD.
