THE HISTORY OF NAPIERS

Napiers is an independent company with humble beginnings dating back to 1860. Our founder, Duncan Napier was born in 1831 and abandoned within hours of his birth. He was taken in by an innkeeper and his wife, who beat him and treated him little better than a slave

At the age of 9, he was apprenticed to a baker and found himself with a cough triggered by the flour dust that he simply could not shake off. Inspired by his mentor, John Hope, he left home at 15 and began to attend Scientific Botany classes in search of a cure for his cough. It was later when he joined the Edinburgh Botanical Society that his interest in herbs grew that he developed his famed Lobelia Cough Syrup. The syrup was an instant sensation, and Duncan decided to become a herbalist. On the 25th of May 1860, he opened a herbal shop and the people of Edinburgh queued for hours to see him and get a herbal cure for their ailments. Nowadays, we supply herbal remedies to people the world over and continue to follow Duncan’s dream “to provide an affordable choice of natural health care for all people”. We remain true to our past, developing combination herb formulas (known as the tonic herb principle) to treat the whole person and the whole body. We also make many of our medicines at traditional practitioner-strength dose levels. Our mottos is TRIED • TESTED • TRUSTED and we live this daily. Our herbal medicines and therapeutic skin creams have been tried by generations of people, who have tested them and return to us decade after decade, who have trusted us and who still do. We are dedicated to the best of health and wellbeing through the use of herbal medicine & other natural therapies and providing a safe alternative to chemical medicine.
