What can we do to help… Be predictable and clear with boundaries and have confidence in protecting those boundaries.

Children need boundaries to feel safe, they might not like them but they need them. As adults we can communicate clearly by using phrases like when … then, we can agreed them in advance so they are expected and we can be aware of our tone of voice to reduce perceived ‘threat’.

Boundaries can be respected with kindness and compassion.

I delivered a workshop to a group of social workers and foster carers on sensory and emotional regulation this morning.

How good is your self awareness . . .

Do you know what body sensations indicate to you that you are anxious?

Can you describe the sensations you notice when you are excited?

Do you know how to regulate your breathing and slow your heart rate?

What do you do to down regulate when your stressed? Take a bath, go for a walk?

What do you do to up regulate when your low? Coffee? Shower? A run?

This stuff takes a lifetime to learn but it is in our reach to teach our children to listen to their body and to learn that they have the skills to change how they think about their feelings.

If you would like to learn more about how to support your child with day to day activities, reduce tension at home and promote positive relationships, you would be welcome to join ‘Reframe and Regulate’ due to start on Monday. Email me: otmcalpine@gmail.com

Highly Sensitive kids

Does your child:

- Notice detail and small change in the environment
- Have heightened emotional reactivity to everyday interactions
- Feel the pain and distress of others
- Become stressed or overwhelmed in loud, busy and unpredictable environments
- Have a proneness to becoming over stimulated and have difficulty being at rest

Thoughts:

💭 Never assume their experience is the same as yours
💭Be curious to their perception
💭Offer validation and ongoing co-regulation (offer your calmness)
💭Teach them ways you manage rather than just tell them off

And remember people differ substantially in sensitively and that’s ok.

Has Covid potentially played a part, I wonder.

If you would be interested in learning ways to support your highly sensitive child, come and join my next Reframe and Regulate course. Drop me an email at otmcalpine@gmail.com
