Joyful Jessica!

We had the pleasure of choosing some new frames with Jessica of Ginger Twist Studio recently and doesn’t she look amazing in them! Plus, she collected them on Galentine’s Day in the perfect outfit!

Jessica went for model ‘Barceloneta’ from French brand Anne et Valentin in this stunning transparent mint green. This model is a signature shape from the brand, a cat eye with structured lines - described by them as for ‘well-tempered, cheeky personalities.’ Isn’t that just lovely!

We were delighted to be one of the first practices to trial Precision7 from Alcon and the feedback so far has been really positive.

This new weekly disposable contact lens is designed to deliver clear, comfortable vision for up to 16 hours a day, across seven days of wear. Featuring technology to help maintain moisture, it can be a great option for those who have some discomfort It is also available in a toric design for patients with astigmatism.

For many wearers, weekly lenses can offer a more cost effective and environmentally conscious alternative to daily disposables, without compromising on comfort.
We regularly introduce new lenses into the practice and supply over 200 different types. If your current lenses do not feel quite right, or your vision does not feel as sharp as it could be, please let us know at your next appointment.

As an independent practice, we are not tied to one manufacturer, so you can be confident we will always recommend the best option available for your eyes and your lifestyle.

If you would like to explore whether Precision7, or another lens, could work better for you, please ask.

There is a contact lens for (almost) everyone!
Most people think contact lenses mean simple dailies or monthlies. For many patients, that’s perfect. But if you’ve been told contact lenses are not for you, or you’ve tried and failed before, there may be far more options than you realise.
At Cameron Optometry, we fit a full range of specialist contact lenses for complex prescriptions, specific eye conditions, and people who want clear, comfortable vision when standard lenses have not suited them.

Multifocal contact lenses
Designed to help with reading as well as distance vision. Available as soft lenses and rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, including daily wear options.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) night lenses
Specially designed RGP lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea while you sleep. Remove them in the morning and enjoy clear vision all day without glasses or contact lenses. Ortho-K is also a highly effective option for myopia management in children, and for those who simply don’t want to wear lenses during the day.

Toric multifocals
For people with both presbyopia and astigmatism. These correct distance and near vision while also addressing astigmatism, available in soft and RGP designs.

RGP lenses
Offering exceptional clarity and an almost unlimited prescription range. Available in standard, toric and multifocal designs, as well as specialist applications such as keratoconus. Many patients who started wearing these decades ago still choose them for their visual quality.

Scleral, corneo-scleral and semi-scleral lenses
Larger diameter RGP lenses that rest on less sensitive parts of the eye, improving comfort and stability. They are also used in some cases of severe dry eye, acting as a sealed moisture chamber for the cornea.

Hybrid lenses
A rigid centre bonded to a soft outer ring, combining the sharp vision of an RGP with the comfort of a soft lens.

Myopia management lenses
Many of these designs are available specifically to slow myopia progression, including specialist soft lenses, hybrids and Ortho-K.

Cosmetic contact lenses
Hand-painted and printed lenses, including partially occlusive designs, iris only, pupil only and full cosmetic options, including large diameter lenses. We also create lenses for actors working in TV and film.

If you’ve been told contact lenses aren’t an option, or you’ve never found the right solution, a specialist contact lens assessment could make all the difference. Get in touch to explore what’s possible.

Nina Mûr ❤️

Every pair of frames from Nina Mûr eyewear takes around 40 hours to make. They are all made from scratch in Madrid with Finnish Birch wood, with 85% of the frame construction process being manual. They are made to order with inspiration from art and collaborations with artists and designers.

The result? Eyewear that is actually sustainable, customisable and unique.

Their manifesto is “Now is the time for change, to believe, play, to seek and to find. To follow your intuition and create your own ideas. To stop waiting and be brave and rebellious, with respect.”

Proudly stocked in the Frame Room.

Delight as Frankenstein receives major awards nominations
We’re delighted that Frankenstein has received widespread recognition this awards season, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Our contact lens technician Heather Muir, supported by locum contact lens specialist Alison MacDougall, worked as a small part of the hair and makeup department during the UK shoot of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein last year.

We’re so proud to have supported such a talented and creative team. Fingers are crossed for the BAFTAS later this month and the Oscars will be announced at their ceremony in March🤞

Why changes in the eyes should never be ignored
It's International Childhood Cancer Day today so we wanted to take this opportunity to raise awareness of the early signs that should never be ignored. Childhood cancers are rare, but early detection can be life-saving, and sometimes the eyes can give important clues. Here are some childhood cancers that can show signs in the eyes.

Retinoblastoma
This is the most common eye cancer in children, usually affecting babies and toddlers.
Signs can include:
• A white or reflective pupil, often noticed in photos
• A new squint
• Poor vision or an eye that looks red or swollen
A white pupil, known as leukocoria, is always urgent and needs urgent assessment.

Neuroblastoma
Neuroblastoma develops in nerve tissue, often in the abdomen or chest, but it can affect the eye area if it spreads.
Eye signs may include:
• Drooping eyelid
• Unequal pupil sizes
• Bulging eye
• Dark bruising or shadows around the eyes without injury

Leukaemia
Leukaemia can sometimes affect the eyes as part of wider changes in the body.
Possible signs include:
• Blurred vision
• Pale appearance inside the eye
• Retinal bleeding or optic nerve swelling, often detected during an eye exam

When should parents act?
Any new, unusual, or unexplained change in your child’s eyes or vision should be checked promptly. In particular:
• A white pupil
• A sudden squint
• Drooping eyelid
• Bulging eye
• Persistent eye swelling or vision changes

Optometrists are trained to recognise red-flag signs and make urgent referrals when needed. Most childhood eye issues are harmless, but the eyes can sometimes reveal wider health concerns before other symptoms appear.

It has been a year since our much-loved colleague and friend, Heather Grandon, passed away. This month we have been quietly reflecting on her time at Cameron Optometry and the lasting impact she had on so many of our patients and on our team.

We are very grateful to everyone who has shared kind messages and good wishes. Heather is always in our thoughts.

See the world through your child's eyes
Short-sightedness (myopia) is often hereditary, so if you discover your child is, say, -1.00, you may already have a sense of how the world looks to them. But for many families, myopia is not inherited. If you have never needed glasses yourself, it can be surprisingly difficult to imagine what your child is really seeing day to day.

This visual simulator is a powerful way to do exactly that. It shows how vision changes from a low prescription through to what would be considered a moderate or high level of myopia, helping you truly understand the difference each stage makes.
The good news is that myopia management can slow this progression, meaning your child may never reach the higher prescription ranges. This has real benefits in everyday life. When prescriptions are low, those moments without glasses or contact lenses, getting up in the night, swimming, or simply misplacing them, are usually manageable. With higher prescriptions, even squinting makes little difference, and daily tasks can become far more challenging. Higher levels of myopia are also associated with an increased risk of eye health issues later in life.

If you would like to learn more about myopia management and how it can support your child’s vision now and in the future, please visit our website. In the meantime, have a play with the visual simulator and see the difference for yourself.

Meet the Team: Beth Merry

We welcomed Beth Merry to Cameron Optometry in 2024, and she has been a wonderful addition to the team. With a background in customer service across retail and events, Beth brings warmth and a genuine love of people to her role.

Beth holds a bachelor’s degree in communication and a master’s in creative writing. She has loved volunteering at book festivals, where helping people and having a good chat were all part of the job. She has really enjoyed returning to a face-to-face role and being the first point of contact for patients coming into the practice.

When it comes to eyewear, Beth loves a bold, round frame in a fun colour, with Gigi and Theo frames having particularly caught her eye.

Her top tip for patients is a practical one: don’t forget to bring in your empty lens spray bottle for a refill.

What Beth loves most about her role is the people. She describes the Cameron Optometry team as kind, supportive, and always willing to help, and she enjoys making patients feel welcome from the moment they walk through the door.

Born in the UK, Beth emigrated to Australia at the age of 10 and returned to the UK in 2017. Having recently completed her master’s, she is currently working on her first book, so you may well spot her name on the shelves of local bookshops in the future. With creativity firmly in her blood, she also enjoys crafting and baking when she’s not at work.
