Meet Mae, one of our brilliant optical assistants
BSc Hons speech pathology & therapy | BSL trained

First up in our meet the optical assistants is Mae Douglas, who originally trained in speech pathology and therapy, completing a BSc Hons and gaining many additional qualifications along the way. Her background gives her exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, something our patients benefit from every single day.

She has particular expertise in deafness, which is invaluable for our patients with hearing loss, including those who use BSL. Mae also has extensive experience supporting children with additional support needs and autism spectrum disorder, which helps hugely during prescreening.

Mae heads up our Eco Committee, taking the lead on our Net Zero certification - striving to make our practice as environmentally friendly as possible.

Favourite glasses
Bold and bright is Mae all over. Her current favourites are Nina Mur with occupational lenses, although she also loves Anne et Valentin and Theo.

Top tip when visiting the optometrist
Arrive a little early to allow time to find a parking spot, and make sure you add enough to the meter for your full visit. Your appointment may include prescreening beforehand and time with the dispensers afterwards, so planning ahead helps you make the most of your visit. If you are unsure how long you will be, just ask and the team can give you a breakdown.

Best part of the job
The patients! Mae loves meeting people and especially enjoys helping when someone needs a little extra support, whether that is communication help, assistance moving around the practice or simple reassurance about what is happening during their appointment.

Stewart’s new look 😎

Stewart recently found out he needed his first pair of glasses and he was nervous - he wasn’t used to seeing himself in glasses so this was a whole new world.

After some encouragement, Stewart was open to trying something bolder than he initially thought! Step in, theo eyewear ❤️

This aviator model is lightweight and in some ways, understated. With an amazing selection of colours to choose from this blue/yellow combination gave the frame a bolder edge that Stewart was looking for! Fitted with Nikon Lenswear UK Seemax Ultimate lenses, don’t they look amazing! Stay tuned to see Stewart’s second pair 👓

Spotlight on our front-of-house optical assistants

At the end of last year, we introduced you to our incredible dispensing team. Next up, it’s the turn of our optical assistants, the front-of-house team who are often the first friendly faces you’ll meet when you walk through our doors.

Our optical assistants combine numerous roles and, as a result, have expertise across a wide variety of areas. This includes pre-screening, those vital checks you have before seeing your optometrist, as well as supporting clinical care, guiding patients through their visit, and keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

Beyond their technical knowledge, our team brings an impressive range of skills. They speak multiple languages, include colleagues proficient in BSL, and are known for being exceptionally caring, calm, and supportive to everyone who walks through the door.

And yes, they also make a mean coffee.

This series is our chance to shine a light on the people who help make Cameron Optometry special.

End of year reflections
As the year draws to a close, we usually take this opportunity to reflect on the highlights that have shaped our year. And while 2025 has brought many positives, it will always be overshadowed by the deep loss of our longest-serving optometrist, Heather Grandon.

What began as a year of sadness ended with a moment of pride as Heather was posthumously recognised with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Scottish Optometry Awards last month. It was a fitting tribute to a remarkable optometrist, colleague and friend.

For a time, it felt as though the heartbeat of the practice had gone quiet. Yet, true to Heather’s spirit, we found our rhythm again and have continued to thrive, just as she would have wished.

Charity giving
This year we donated funds to over 25 charities, including Ferrywell Youth Project, the Teapot Trust, The Open Door, House of Hope, CHAS, Myeloma UK, U-Evolve, Home Start Edinburgh and Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity. In 2026 we will continue to support causes close to our hearts, and we’d love your input. All our donations are made to charities nominated by our patients or team members, ensuring every contribution has personal meaning and impact. If you know a charity that would benefit, please let us know.

Our clinics
We’ve continued to grow our specialist clinics, investing in new technology and expertise to enhance patient care.

Our Tear Clinic has been particularly busy, helping many people who had almost given up hope, find effective, long-term relief from dry eye. While our Visual Stress and Vision Therapy Clinics have helped children build confidence and improve performance at school. And as part of our ongoing mission to tackle the rise in short-sightedness, increasing numbers of parents have chosen myopia management lenses for their children, protecting their vision for the future.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to launch a macular degeneration (AMD) clinic in 2026, offering treatments and expertise not currently available in Scotland.

Our team
This year has tested our resilience, with Heather’s passing and several team members requiring extended leave. Throughout it all, our dedicated staff, supported by a talented locum optometrist, have ensured we continue to deliver the highest standards of care.

We know waiting times have sometimes been longer than usual, and we are incredibly grateful for your patience and understanding. We’re pleased to say that 2026 will bring shorter waiting times as we move toward a steadier rhythm once again.
Our staff continued to shine and we celebrated some impressive professional achievements. A special mention goes to our contact-lens technician Heather Muir took her skills beyond the practice, working behind the scenes on the film sets of Netflix’s Department Q and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. We are incredibly proud to see her talents recognised on such exciting projects.

Our eyewear
This year saw the arrival of new and exciting eyewear brands including Rolf and Nina Mur, alongside fresh releases from some of our long-standing favourites. We’re proud to champion designers who share our commitment to sustainability, ensuring your eyewear looks great and feels good in every sense.

Next year will bring even more beautiful designs, so please do pop in for a browse. You never know which frame might become your new favourite.

To all our patients, thank you for your trust and support throughout the year. It means so much to us. From all of us at Cameron Optometry, we wish you a peaceful festive season and a bright start to 2026.

A party like no other!

We had our Christmas party on Saturday and our Christmas committee have really out done themselves! 🎄 We all had the best time enjoying lovely food and drinks, a magician bringing some very real magic, and gorgeous cocktails in the Velvet Lounge - complete with personalised slippers!

We had a celebration of all of the teams, including poems and speeches (with some jokes in there!) The Optometrist team treated us to a performance with a song and instruments 🎶

Beth and Heather brought some of their fabulous baking so we enjoyed homemade gingerbread and fudge too.

Big thank you to The Scott Edinburgh for making it an incredible night in a very special venue.

🌟Sponsoring Christmas sparkle
We were proud to sponsor the sparkle for children in hospital again this year, supporting their magical advent calendar. Behind every door lies a special surprise for seriously ill children—we were delighted to support the Christmas party. Children were able to join in with lots of festive games, treats, and dancing. There was also an opportunity to participate in an immersive music installation.

Every day, 500 seriously ill children and their families go to hospital facing a potentially life-changing visit. Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity helps to ensure no child has to face hospital alone – especially at Christmas.

If you want to spread some Christmas sparkle and donate to this incredible charity, you can do so on their website https://donate.echcharity.org.

Secret Santa and Christmas Jumper Day!

Yesterday we hosted our annual team Secret Santa swap and we love to dress up for the occasion 🎅 Here’s some of the team showing off their favourite gifts 🎁

Just a reminder that our suppliers often take the full two week festive period off so although we will be here in between Christmas and New Year, it is unlikely we will be able to contact external companies regarding orders. Thank you for your understanding as always!
