Honouring the legacy of Heather Grandon at the Scottish Optometry Awards

Earlier this month, we attended the inaugural Scottish Optometry Awards, hosted by Vision Scotland and The Scottish Optical Conference. It was an evening dedicated to celebrating excellence in our profession, and we are deeply proud to share that Heather Grandon was posthumously recognised with one of the night’s highest honours, the Outstanding Achievement Award.

For more than three decades, Heather was the beating heart of Cameron Optometry. Her exceptional clinical expertise, compassion, and unwavering dedication transformed countless lives. Renowned across the UK for her work in specialist contact lens fitting, she restored not just sight, but confidence and independence to so many patients.

Heather was also an inspiring mentor, guiding and supporting generations of optometrists with patience, generosity, and humility. Her influence continues to shape our practice and our profession every day.

This award is a fitting tribute to a remarkable career and an extraordinary person whose legacy will always be part of our practice.

Jen has found her third (but probably not final!) Kirk & Kirk 😍

If you know Kirk & Kirk, you know their signature style is all about colour, by using acrylic to craft their frames they can achieve unique shades. Their latest collection has gone in a slightly different direction with similarly gorgeous colours, but this time in matt acrylic! With metal sides! Inspired by the geology of a river carving its path through Earth, this collection ‘Contour’ has brought a whole new look to the brand.

Jen went for model ‘Emma’ in colour Jungle - a stunning emerald green. The matt texture shows off the curves of the frame beautifully and makes it more understated yet still so much fun. We can’t wait to see what your next pair are Jen! 🫶🏻

Meet the Team: Lesley Kerr
Diploma of Credit: Clinical Optometric Assistant | Certified Colour Consultant

Lesley’s journey in optics began in 1986 in Michigan, USA, where she trained with a company called NuVision – a bustling practice in a shopping mall with its own on-site glazing lab. This hands-on experience gave Lesley a deep understanding of dispensing, repairs, and behind-the-scenes lab work.

In 1993, Lesley moved back to Scotland and started a temporary role at what was then McGrath & Cameron and is now the longest serving member of the team here.
In 2002, Lesley gained a Diploma of Credit in Clinical Optometric Assisting from Anglia Polytechnic University. More recently, she completed training to become a Certified Colour Consultant, a skill she uses daily to help patients select frames that flatter their colouring and style.

She has undergone extensive lens training over the years from multiple suppliers – most recently Nikon – ensuring that she’s always up to date with the latest lens innovations.

💜Favourite designer: Theo (she confesses to having three new pairs this year alone!), with a soft spot for Anne et Valentin as well.
🕶️Top tip: Always, always have a spare pair of glasses. No one wants to wear their gardening specs to a dinner party!
🌟 Best part of the job: Seeing the look on a patient’s face when they love their new specs. That’s the main reason she still loves the job after all these years.

Mixing it up ⬆️

Alison loved model ‘Bop’ from the latest Anne et Valentin collection but wasn’t sure on having it with clear lenses. We agreed the chunky oversized shape would suit sunglass lenses SO well… and we were right! With a dark burgundy tint matching the gorgeous dark magenta of the frame these make a wonderful pair of prescription sunglasses for Alison.

Remember most optical frames that have ‘clear’ lenses can be made with dark lenses too, so the choice for your next set of prescription sunglasses bigger than you think! 😎

Meet the Team: Karen Sertin
Dispensing Optician | FBDO | BSc (Hons) in Public Health | Paediatric Eyecare (in progress)

Karen has been a qualified Dispensing Optician for over 11 years, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to our patients. She holds a Diploma in Ophthalmic Dispensing (FBDO) and joined our practice nearly three years ago.

Karen is currently expanding her specialist knowledge by undertaking a Professional Certificate in Paediatric Eyecare through ABDO, further enhancing her ability to support younger patients with complex visual needs.

Her passion for staying at the forefront of optics means she’s taken part in numerous Nikon training events and she’s played a valuable role in two myopia management studies. In the first, she helped track patient compliance with myopia management glasses and contact lenses.

In the second (ongoing), she’s assisting in a retrospective study analysing how different types of correction affect prescriptions over time. For both studies, Karen was responsible for collecting and inputting the data for the University of Manchester.

🟩Frame style: A bold acetate cat-eye, especially the green Cutler and Gross frames pictured here.
✨Top tip: Use proper lens spray and a soft cloth for cleaning your glasses. Never use washing-up liquid or hot water as it can ruin the coating.
💛Best part of the job: Helping patients find a frame they feel genuinely confident in, especially when they’re open to something a little bold!

Our very own Star Baker! 🌟👩‍🍳

Throughout the whole season of The Great British Bake Off our Beth follows along, baking every week with the shows theme, and we are so lucky to sample it! There has been so many incredible bakes including a Bakewell tart, an array of biscuits including Bourbons and custard creams, Black Forest gateau and this showstopper of a chocolate orange chequerboard cake! 🤩

So it only seemed right to award her Cameron Optometry’s Star Baker! Thank you Beth, we are so lucky to have you!

👀Heather Muir keeps A-listers camera-ready on Frankenstein
We are delighted to finally be able to share that our super duper contact lens technician, Heather, was behind the scenes on the UK set of Frankenstein, her second involvement in a major production in the past year.

Seasoned expert in contact lens handling, Heather, together with locum Alison MacDougall, worked on the set of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, alongside the outstanding prosthetics and makeup team to ensure the safe insertion and removal of cosmetic lenses throughout the shoot within the UK.

The duo worked with A-lister, Jacob Elordi, and talented young actor, Christian Convery, providing them with specialist contact lens care.

Using their expertise to safeguard the cast’s eye health during the demanding filming process, the team continued the same high standard of care that Heather had also recently brought to the set of another Netflix success, Department Q.

We are incredibly fortunate to be approached to be able to go on location now and again on such exciting projects. You can spy Heather and Alison's handiwork on Netflix from Friday 7 November.

Meet the Team: Carol Innes (Field)

FBDO | First Aider | Specialist in Myopia Management, Sports Eyewear, and Paediatrics

Carol’s optical journey began on the memorable date of 8/8/88, and she qualified as a Dispensing Optician in August 2004. She joined our practice in 2014 and brings decades of hands-on dispensing expertise to the team.

Carol is trained in a wide range of specialist areas, including: paediatric dispensing, myopia management and sports eyewear solutions.

She is also a trained first aider, so our patients are in safe hands in every sense.
Carol’s dedication to learning has taken her through countless certificates, modules, and training days over the years. Her calm, knowledgeable approach makes hugely popular among regular patients.

🌈 Favourite brands: Theo for their bold, playful shapes; Cutler and Gross for punchy, vibrant styles; and Maui Jim for having the clearest polarised lenses available.
👁️ Top tip: Use the 20-20-20 rule, that is every 20 minutes on a screen, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. And don’t forget your sunglasses. UV protection matters, even on cloudy days.
💬 Best part of the job: No two days are the same. Helping locals and visitors choose frames that feel like them is always exciting.
