Meet Mae, one of our brilliant optical assistants
BSc Hons speech pathology & therapy | BSL trained
First up in our meet the optical assistants is Mae Douglas, who originally trained in speech pathology and therapy, completing a BSc Hons and gaining many additional qualifications along the way. Her background gives her exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, something our patients benefit from every single day.
She has particular expertise in deafness, which is invaluable for our patients with hearing loss, including those who use BSL. Mae also has extensive experience supporting children with additional support needs and autism spectrum disorder, which helps hugely during prescreening.
Mae heads up our Eco Committee, taking the lead on our Net Zero certification - striving to make our practice as environmentally friendly as possible.
Favourite glasses
Bold and bright is Mae all over. Her current favourites are Nina Mur with occupational lenses, although she also loves Anne et Valentin and Theo.
Top tip when visiting the optometrist
Arrive a little early to allow time to find a parking spot, and make sure you add enough to the meter for your full visit. Your appointment may include prescreening beforehand and time with the dispensers afterwards, so planning ahead helps you make the most of your visit. If you are unsure how long you will be, just ask and the team can give you a breakdown.
Best part of the job
The patients! Mae loves meeting people and especially enjoys helping when someone needs a little extra support, whether that is communication help, assistance moving around the practice or simple reassurance about what is happening during their appointment.
