We Are Hiring!

You can try linking what your child enjoys during screen time with other activities.
If you can associate an activity with their screen time interests, you may motivate them to try something new. For example, you could visit a farm to visit their favourite animals they have seen on TV!
You could consider what type of content your child watches during screen time.
Certain programmes can help a child's language development (when they are older than 2 years old). We suggest shows such as "Something Special", "Yakadee" and "Alphablocks".
You could try modelling good screen time behaviour.
If you turn off or don't look at devices when talking to your child, you are showing them good screen time habits. It will also help you to interact with your child as you will not become distracted.
You can talk about what they are doing or watching on the screen. This will support their language development because they are talking about something they are interested in.

Children learn and develop language at their own pace.
At this age they often can use numbers, colours and words that join sentences. They also can ask "when", "where" or "why" questions and talk about things that have happened.
To help their language development, you could try talking about your day and asking them about their day.

Ages and Stages of Development: 4 years old
Your child will be growing, developing and learning at their own pace. Typically, by 4 years old they can use a spoon and fork, and can throw, catch and kick a ball.
Things to look out for are: if your child is slow to follow instructions, struggles to make ideas into sentences or has jumbled language.

Let's Get Moray Playing! (4 years old)
Play is important for speech and language development in children.
At 4 years old your child may enjoy associative play. This is when children play next to each and interact a little with each other.
However, they may not yet be fully cooperating in a shared game.
Tip: try telling your toddler a joke. This will model a fun, new way for them to interact with others!

Let's Get Moray Talking: 3 years
Toddlers learn and develop language at their own pace.
At this age they often can put four or five words together, ask questions and use action words like "run" and "eat".
To help their language development you could try giving them plenty of time when speaking. It can sound like they are stammering at this age but try to listen to what they are telling you instead of how they are saying their words.
