✨ She Didn’t Need Me… ✨

I was going to post something else today, but I was at the most beautiful birth yesterday and I need to share...💕

My dream clients invited me to walk alongside them on their journey for the second time, what an absolute privilege.🙏🏻

But, when it came to the birth itself…they didn’t want me in the room.

And I mean that in the best, most sacred way possible.

I popped in now and then. Held space quietly. Helped her drop into her breath and body with meditation when things felt intense. But mostly? It was just the two of them.

Her and her husband.
Their baby.
Their sacred space.
Their power.

He held her with such love and fierce protection. She softened, opened, surrendered. She roared their baby into the world in her own rhythm, in her own time, in her own power.

Afterwards, somewhere between the joy and the tears...she said something I’ll never forget. And I’m paraphrasing, because…emotions!

“You don’t know how special you are. You gave me so much knowledge. The power. The belief. You helped me trust myself, my body and my baby. I got to have the birth of my dreams because of that. I feel so empowered.”

And THAT...
That is the doula dream.

To support people so deeply, so quietly, so thoroughly…that they realise they never needed us at all.

They might want us.
They might call on us.
They might lean on us.

But in the end, they walk through the fire themselves. And rise on the other side more powerful, more radiant, more sovereign than ever before.

To every wild woman preparing for birth:
It’s not about outsourcing your power.
It’s about reclaiming it.

🌿 You are capable.
🌿 You are made for this.

📣 It’s Birth Trauma Week in the UK…and I’m tired...

Tired of seeing reports.
Tired of reading the same headlines.
Tired of hearing the same stories time after time.
Tired of pretending this is a mystery.

We know what causes trauma in birth.
It’s not mysterious. It’s not “inevitable.”
It’s not just “how birth goes sometimes.”

Let’s name it:
🌪 Birth trauma is most often caused by people.
By systems.
By the policies, protocols and professionals who ignore, coerce, and override the people they’re supposed to care for.

The VAST majority of birth trauma could be prevented with…wait for it…

✨ Kindness. Compassion. Communication. Consent.
That’s it. That’s the big secret. 🎤

Yet every year, women and birthing people are left picking up the pieces of “care” that harmed them.
And we, the birthworkers, doulas, midwives and partners at their side, are left heartbroken and furious. Again.

I don’t want more reports.
I want change.
I want people to stop being harmed in the very moment they should feel safest.
I want care that actually cares.

✨ What I’d say as your doula… if I wasn’t afraid I’d hurt your feelings ✨

The NHS is a mess. It’s built to protect its staff and policies, not women having babies.
And most staff are practising defensively. That means fear, is usually running the show.
It causes unnecessary, preventable harm to birthing people and babies 🛑

If you’re planning a homebirth you should probably be prepared to freebirth or to transfer into hospital.
The system is too under-resourced to guarantee anything. Homebirth teams are being cut overnight, at weekends and if the hospital is short staffed 🏥

You give birth how you live.
If you trust your body, live well, do the work, you’ll be fine.
But if you just say the right things without walking the talk? Good luck 😳

You need to take back control of your health.
Radical responsibility is uncomfortable but it’s necessary.
Stop outsourcing your decisions. You are allowed to say no and to trust your intuition 💫

Evidence-based care is great but your intuition is often better 🤯
If you can afford a private midwife or a doula, do it.
This is money you won’t regret spending.

Hypnobirthing and antenatal classes are brilliant. But they only work if you do the work 👩🏻‍🎓
Practice. Learn. Prepare for postpartum like it matters...because it does.

If your partner doesn’t want to be there, maybe that’s for the best.
This isn’t the moment to drag someone through it. You deserve active support ⚡

And finally:
Sometimes, despite everything...the trust, the prep, the learning...birth doesn’t go how you hoped.
And that’s hard.
And it’s okay to grieve that.

✨ Day 4 at The Doula Training Foundation ✨
Today was about bringing it all together...heart, strategy, and the power of your presence. 💫

We explored how to build strong relationships with midwives, creating positive space in the birth room and postpartum. The power of language. The words we speak as doulas, midwives and health care professionals really do echo for a lifetime.

We got real about birth rights, how to get clear on consent, and what to cover in antenatal sessions that truly support your clients.

And the business side? We dove into crafting dream offers, setting aligned prices, building a brand that reflects you, and using websites, reviews & social media.

We finished with cacao and a gorgeous meditation. Another gorgeous group of women who, we're sure, will go on to do incredible things 💖

This work is powerful. And yes, it can be sustainable, profitable, and deeply fulfilling.

Another super busy day

We explored every angle of infant feeding:
🤱 Breastfeeding basics, positioning, and attachment
🍼 Responsive bottle feeding
🥄 Cup feeding & expressing
🧪 Formula & supplementary feeding
✅ How to recognise if baby is feeding well and how to support our clients

We also covered:
🧠 The importance of making a solid postpartum plan
🚨 Obstetric emergencies and the doula’s role
⚠️ Compexities in pregnancy and how to support clients through them
🤝 Supporting all kinds of birth partners, from husbands and wives to mums, sisters and friends
⏳ Induction of labour, the why, when and how
🛠️ Assisted birth, forceps, ventouse and what doulas need to know
✂️ Caesarean birth, planned, unplanned, gentle and how we show up with care

Another brilliant day full of learning, laughter, and deepening our knowledge as doulas 💛

It’s been a full, hands-on, heart-filled day and this incredible group of women continue to blow us away with their passion, questions and presence. 💫

Another maternity investigation. Really???

Another year, another taskforce, another report saying exactly what we already know.

Yes, it sounds like progress. But let’s be honest we’ve been here before. The words might change, but the message is always the same:

🌀 Women want to be treated with kindness.
🌀 They want compassion, respect, and to be listened to.
🌀 They want safe care and continuity.

It's not rocket science...just be kind!!!

We don’t need another committee to confirm what we already know 🙄 Just look at the countless other reports and investigations that tell us what women want.

What we need is people in the system with the time, space, and humanity to act on the reports.

The problem isn’t a lack of evidence. It’s a lack of action. There is no accountability in maternity services and therefore, no change. 🤬

Midwives and birthworkers are exhausted. Families are grieving. And communities are STILL raising the same alarms they were a decade ago.

The solutions exist. The reports already say it all.

What we need now is accountability, investment, and care that centres PEOPLE, not paperwork.

These eyes have seen a lot.
Birth. Death. And everything in between.

This week, they’ve spent time doing what doulas do best...listening. Holding space. Being a quiet witness to the stories of fellow doulas, friends, and families navigating a system that too often feels broken.👀

I want you to know:
I see you. I hear you. I honour the work you’re doing.🙏🏻

Because this work isn’t easy right now.
We’re showing up in a maternity system that isn’t built to support women or their families and we see the impact of that every day. The trauma. The cracks. The heartbreak.💔

But we’re not alone.
We have each other.
And we must keep finding our people, building our communities, and lifting each other up.💫
