Yesterday I gave a one hour lecture on the applications of clinical hypnosis and hypnotherapy in dentistry to the Bromley BDA branch meeting. Thank you to the current chairman Patrick Donahoe for inviting me.
I spoke about how to train in clinical hypnosis and what techniques are used to help my patients. Issues included needle phobia Dental phobia, gagging, breaking habits.etc There was plenty of audience participation which was fun.

First in a mini series about Dental Phobia
What is a phobia and how do they occur?
A phobia is an extreme fear of something, that is beyond the 'normal' reaction of most people. Fear triggers the sympathetic nervous system...launching you into the fight, flight or freeze behaviours where you just want to lash out, run away or ' play dead', unable to move.
How do dental phobias develop? Usually through a bad experience or a perceived bad experience made worse by peer pressure or family members advising you that it 'will hurt' or an unsympathetic dentist who is rough with you and disrespects you. It could be a childhood experience or something that happened last month. These memories and learned behaviours are stored in the sub-conscious mind. Next time you even think about going to the dentist the body goes into flight, fight or freeze mode instantly.
