Trails For All. Disability Inclusion training. Glenveigh. One or two places still available.

Are you passionate about making the outdoors accessible for people with a disability? I’m delivering a series Trails For All training. There are still a few spots available. Funding by and delivered with the support of NPWS this training is aimed towards existing walking leaders who want to expand their knowledge and skills to support inclusive access. You should be Mountaineering Ireland member, hold a Mountain Training Walking Award (LL, H@M or ML) and be genuinely passionate about inclusion. Approved CPD. Dates; Wednesday 19th. Wicklow. Friday 21st Killarney. Monday 24th Glenveigh.

Active Disability Ireland announces Key Voices in Disability and Sport for the National Conference 📢

Active Disability Ireland is proud to welcome a line-up of leading voices in disability and sport to challenge perceptions, share lived experiences and discuss creating equal opportunities for people with disabilities to be active.

The annual conference will take place on Wednesday, 3rd December, at The Johnstown Estate, County Meath, marking International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

A recent day working with the fab team Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark

Earlier this month, the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark team took part in a dynamic and thought-provoking training session led by Paul Keelagher from Accessible Adventures Ireland. The session explored the Social Model of Disability, encouraging us to rethink barriers and embrace inclusive design in our work.

We also got hands-on experience 🤲 with adaptive equipment, gaining practical insights into how small changes can make a big difference 🌟 for visitors of all abilities. 🌍 This training marks an important step in our ongoing commitment to making the Geopark welcoming and accessible to everyone. 🤝

Promoting wellbeing. What a fantastic day for our group of adventurers on our “Autumn Mists” wellbeing journey on Lough Erne. With an ever growing body of research on the benefits of exercise in nature we were metaphorically and physically reflected in the calming waters of the Erne at National Trust Crom. In a moment of calmwe listened to the perfect stillness, water dripping from our paddles, birdsong in the surrounding native woodland. Today’s activity was supported under the Public Health Agency Clear Project. Taking Connect; with each other, Learning new skills, Be Active, Taking Notice of our amazing surroundings. Give; today’s team effort was about supporting each other and working together. Thanks to National Trust Fermanagh for the support with our activities and in particular the team at Crom who have maintain this wonderful place for us to engage with nature, and Neris Folding Kayaks UK for their ongoing support for our work.

I’ve been following Laura’s podcast weekly (this is episode 8 ) but it this episode is the one that I have found the most powerful. Why? Because it’s the stuff we can control. It’s about our everyday decisions, actions and language. I talk about the Social Model of Disability when I’m delivering inclusion training for instructors working in the adventure and education sectors.

Laura’s podcast this week lays out the often brutal reality of discrimination, some of it is institutional failure. Some of what she outlines here spans a spectrum from plain rude to ignorant.

If you work in the music concert industry or airport security you really need to listen to this episode!!

Laura, I’m inspired by your faith in humanity, the thought that some of the people you described in this episode will learn and evolve, like the guy who just needs to meet more awesome people. 🤩

Why do people with a disability still have to fight for the basic right to be included?

It’s a great question. What if we all challenged ourselves to make the world a little bit more inclusive and accessible? A challenge. Start tomorrow as soon as you get up. Take time to listen, understand, include.

Only 3 of the Norths 187 State care sights has wheelchair accessibility information centrally available.
We need to do more more in this space. Our Lough Erne Expedition in April provided an insight into the barriers and relatively straightforward access work that can help to address some of the issues

“Disabled people should be able to access and enjoy our shared heritage on an equal basis with everyone else."

A disability advocacy group has said that it is “deeply concerning” that wheelchair accessibility information is only centrally available online for three of the north’s 187 historic state care sites.
