We’re very sad to report that the community public access defib based at fowler_fp on Magdalen Road, Exeter, appears to have been stolen.

It’s so frustrating as there is no re-sale market for defibrillators and it’s highly unlikely someone would steal it for their own personal benefit (you just have to ask if you did need one)! 🤷🏻

We will always make sure that stolen defibs are replaced, but it’s disappointing that a defib that could have been used in another location is now being used as a replacement. We will also now need to change the cabinet to a locked version. Locked cabinets are slower to access in emergencies and can sometimes be the difference between life and death. 😢

Please do get in touch if you can help or have any information.

A survey carried out by Censuswide on behalf of the British Heart Foundation suggests 43% of adults in the UK have never learnt CPR. That's up to 23 million people! Furthermore, of those who hadn’t learnt CPR, 58% said that no-one in their household had learnt CPR either, leaving entire families and households vulnerable.

Research from the University of Warwick's OHCAO Epidemiology Report shows a staggering 80% of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur within the home, followed by 12.7% occurring in a public space. This underscores the critical need for adults in the UK to learn proper CPR technique.

You can learn CPR from the comfort of your home in just 15 minutes. Grab a cuppa and a cushion to practise on, and check out The British Heart Foundation's interactive CPR training course: https://www.bhf.org.uk/how-you-can-help/how-to-save-a-life/how-to-do-cpr/learn-cpr-in-15-minutes

Alternatively, head over to the Resuscitation Council UK's Lifesaver learning to
immerse yourself in realistic cardiac arrest scenarios, where you’ll learn lifesaving CPR skills: https://www.lifesaver.org.uk/

It's so lovely there's so many defibrillators about. Another option of a training session to learn how to use them.

Our group began as a lockdown idea in 2020. With support from our community enabler 4 local residents formed a constituted community group, a first step towards our defibrillator.
Grants from Devon County Council and Exeter City Council enabled us to explore providers for a defibrillator. Further fund raising came from Heavitree and Wonford Running club, The Star Inn and local residents.
Finally at the end of 2021 we were able to celebrate the achievement of our community defibrillator. It was significant that our Lord Mayor, Trish Oliver opened it for us.
It is situated on a wall at The Star Inn in the heart of our community.
A defibrillator requires ongoing voluntary support. It is necessary to make regular hands on checks to ensure the machine remains in working order. A report must be posted on a Webnos computer system which is how the emergency services know we have a live machine. We have a rota of checkers.
Already the defibrillator has been called for on several occasions.
We had an awareness session in December 2021 and could organise another subject to demand.
The work does not stop there. Our defibrillator is provided by a national charity called the Community Heartbeat Trust (CHBT). We have a partnership that secures the machine for up to 10 years, with insurance cover, maintenance, replacement pads and batteries. However, fund raising is required to ensure the future of our defibrillator. Also to support the work of CHBT who, provide all the defibrillators for the Co Operative stores and many many other sites around the country.
In the summer we were thrilled to accept a cheque from International Moose Exeter 24 Lodge. They seek to support local groups who are active in supporting local residents. 24 Lodge run the Moose Charity Shop in Pinhoe Road next to the small Morrison shop. Do pop in and support them.
So the next time you see a defibrillator on an outside wall, stop and see who provided the machine and have a thought for all those who have given and still do give, their time to ensure the long term future of the machine for their community.
If you would like to join our group please leave us a message.

We'd like to thank everyone who supported the summer raffle, especially the local businesses in Whipton Community who very generously donated prizes. We raised £171 which will be a great step towards our ongoing costs when the supported partnership with The Community Heartbeat Trust is renewed in four years.

We are looking for volunteers to be involved in ongoing fund raising.

🌹🌸🌺🌷Our next fund raiser is the Spring raffle to be drawn at The Star Inn on 30 June. We would welcome any prizes to be donated from locals, supporters, businesses.
🍫I have had a nice box of chocolates already from the corner shop and wine from a supporter. 🍷 🍾🎟🎟🎟

Hello all, I thought you would be pleased to see our new plaque which is up beside our defibrillator. For a while we thought we would never get one that was perfect and within our means.
Fortunately, our supporter Roger Morton suggested Stalite Signs and they were very helpful. I could not recommend them highly enough.

A great morning spent watching the unveiling of the new Whipton Village community defibrillator by the Lord Mayor. A huge thanks to those Whipton residents who have worked so hard to fundraise for the defibrillator and coordinate its installation at the Star Inn. They have also arranged a free training session next at 2.30 next Tuesday 7th at Whipton Community Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend!
