Think Kidneys Working with the kidney community to develop, support and share improvements of care delivered Why Think Kidneys? We are developing education resources too.

Our kidneys are important to our wellbeing, looking after our bodies through the production of urine to get rid of excess water and toxins. They are complex and vital organs that need to be looked after if they are to help keep us healthy. We have two programmes currently -
Acute kidney injury which is a sudden and recent reduction in a person's kidney function. It’s not caused as a result of a physical blow to the body. We are working to improve detection, management and treatment of AKI by raising awareness of it among health and social care staff. Ultimately was want to see a reduction in the number of incidences of AKI through better awareness. This has the potential to reduce harm, suffering and avoidable death. Transforming Participation in Chronic Kidney Disease is a new programme being developed to help people living with CKD to live their best lives. We will be working with renal teams and their patients aiming to help people develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to manage their condition in the best possible way. This will result in improved self-management, shared decision making and greater understanding. The teams working on this programme aim to have a 50:50 split of people living with CKD and health care professionals and are working in true co-production. And that’s unique.

Shout out to this surgery team, who recently used a ‘swing room’ hospital model to complete eight challenging surgeries in a single day.

The swing room model at West Middlesex Hospital gives surgeons access to two operating theatres next to each other at the same time so they can perform emergency procedures in one and elective surgery – operations planned in advance – in the other.

Through careful planning, the team ensured safe and efficient turnovers between patients, performing eight complex operations for laparoscopic cholecystectomies (to remove the gallbladder), skin lesion excisions (removal of skin with abnormal growths or appearances to that around it) and hernia repairs.

Anna Kamocka, Consultant Bariatric, Upper Gastrointestinal and General Surgeon at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, said: “I am extremely proud to be a part of such a fantastic team that made this possible.

“Following this achievement, with all patients making speedy recoveries, we hope to continue using innovative methods such as this one to provide care for our community.”

Thank you to the team at West Middlesex Hospital for going above and beyond for Londoners. 💙
