So someone has asked where the inspiration for this project came from, so I’ll give you a brief history of how it came about.

I have always been a ‘larger’ fellow myself, in fact when clothes shopping I always look for ‘tent’ size but alas no shops cater for that, so I have to look for sizes that have more x’s than a Valentines card from a secret admirer. This always bothered me (my size, not the Valentines cards).

As a youngster I use to love playing football and running about playing sports however as the years have progressed I have come to realise that my old bones can no longer face the rigours of sprinting, running or generally going any faster than a mild paced walk; that coupled with my over active ‘pie arm’ (I think that’s what Al Murray would call it) bunging food in my face and the weight piling on, sports were not on the agenda….

Then a few years back I was lucky enough to be a part of ECCT’s ‘Fit Fans’ program, which was a twelve week food and movement course aimed at ‘fat fellas’ like me. The idea was simple, teach us ff’s (fat fellas) about food, nutrition and give us the facilities to do a good hour of activities that we’re not to strenuous on the bones. ECCT did quite a few of these courses, however when the funding ran out, it was shelved and all the people who had now got use to ‘moving about’ weekly had nowhere to go and the community fell apart.

Ever since it had been something I wanted to address but didn’t have the financial backing to start it; however I put a few feelers out. Recently I was lucky enough to come across ECFC Charity Fundraisers and they (along with some other good friends) encouraged me to give it a go. Hence Walk and Weigh moved from the 1% inspiration stage to the 99% perspiration stage. (Thankfully the name progressed as well, initially I was planning on calling it ‘Who ate all the pies’ or WAATP for short).

Now in 2026, with some financial backing from ECFC Charity Fundraisers, we find ourself in this position recruiting willing participants (some may say victims) to start a months trial, fully funded by ECFC Charity Fundraisers… to help find a way of helping people like myself who are battling the BMI with limited mobility.

So that’s the history… I do hope to meet some of you soon, out on the Astro pitch having a giggle whilst getting a bit more active.

So after a long time in the ‘inspiration stage’ and quite a while looking to develop a program for individuals who are overweight; I have decided that who am I to know what other larger lads want or need to help them lose weight.

That is why after some financial help from ECFC Charity Fundraisers and input from much trusted mates (Mark Cordell, Matt Gofton, Greg Manley) I thought lets create a community and from that, working with those taking part, sculpt out a walking football weight loss program that has been developed by the lads that are using it!

With the agreement in place from ECFC Charity Fundraisers they will fund an Astro pitch for us to play on for the first month (4 weeks); sessions will last one hour and will take place once a week (due to availability we are currently looking a St James School Exeter, from 8-9pm on Friday evenings). The actual session start date has yet to be confirmed but we will keep in contact. There will also be a WhatsApp group for notification and up to the minute updates.

As I said earlier we are starting from a blank sheet and will work as a community to build a program that can hopefully help us all lose some weight. Ideally I would like to mix teams each week, so that it doesn’t become a ‘tribe’ mentality within the community however as I said this will be YOUR program to shape.

The first four weeks will literally be us meeting, weighing in and then having a kickabout for approximately an hour… no subs, everyone will be on the pitch for the whole hour if they want, however if you are feeling a bit puffed out, then you will be welcome to take a break!! Ultimately the aim for the first 4 weeks will be looking to see how much weight we can lose as a group!
Talking about fees after the first 4 free week period is also something I would like to raise, I would like for this program to be as accessible to everyone as possible and would therefore be looking to charge a MAXIMUM of £3 a session, obviously these fees would to be to cover costs of pitch hire etc… I would NOT be looking to make a profit or anything from it; however on the flipside of the coin I can not also afford to finance it myself.

So in a ‘nutshell’ this is what I’ve invited you all too… please do not feel I will change how I think about you if you do decline this; I can promise I won’t!

Hi guys; if you’re reading this after getting an invite from Taz FIRSTLY I have sent invites about this to numerous people who I feel may be interested in taking part OR helping guide me in the right direction OR may be help with funding etc… Please don’t think I’m suggesting anything about your weight!
