I was listening to a Spotify Christmas playlist this morning, when one of my favourite Christmas songs came on… ‘When a Child Is Born’.
I know it’s a song rooted in the Christmas story, but for me it represents every child …. every new life … and the hope that comes with beginnings.

In a recent podcast, Vic and I were talking about the importance of ceremony: of marking and honouring new life, and of how rituals and rites of passage help us acknowledge the big moments that shape us. They remind us that life is sacred, changing, and worthy of being witnessed.

As we come into this season of celebration, I’m also mindful that for many, Christmas carries reflection, tenderness, or sadness. Yesterday I officiated a funeral for a family who have lost their mum. Christmas will never quite be the same for them, and that matters too.

This time of year holds joy and grief side by side. Birth and death. Beginnings and endings. That’s why ceremony and ritual are so important … they give us space to honour it all.

This has been a year of new beginnings, new old friends, new experiences and laughter. It has also been a year of challenges and I’m so grateful to have had the support of family, friends and colleagues through all the ups and downs. The greatest gift we can give at Christmas is our time. I hope you’ll all be spending time with people you love over the festive season.

One of our podcast followers spotted this error in the captions! It should say ‘catafalque’ which is the structure that the coffin sits on during a funeral ceremony… and not ‘catapult’ which … well we all know what that means! I know the funeral industry is always trying to look for unique ways to let your loved one go, but that’s taking it a bit far!! … see what I did there?! 🤣

This is not just a funeral ceremony… this is a Rites and Rituals Scotland ceremony! ❤️🙏🤣
