Yesterday, cyclists from PHL Group completed a Round the Island challenge raising money for MacMillan Cancer Research (more photos to follow next week). One of our cyclists had a problem with the chain on her bike and we contacted Zoom IOW who were completely fabulous and delivered an e-bike to us ensuring the cyclist could complete the challenge and collected it when we'd finished the ride at the ferry terminal. Huge shout out to Scott and his team! I can't recommend them highly you're on the Isle of Wight and want to hire a bike check them out!

Armed Forces Day Spotlight - Nina!

From a lifelong ambition to serve, to proudly becoming a Lance Corporal with the 254 Multi Role Medical Regiment, Nina’s journey into the armed forces wasn’t straightforward, but her determination never wavered.

Becoming a mum at 19 meant putting her military dream on hold, but she pushed forward, completed her degree in Operating Department Practice (ODP), and later found her way back to the path she’d always hoped to follow.

At PHL Group, Nina brings the discipline, resilience, and integrity instilled through military service into every shift in the operating theatre — confidently advocating for patients and leading by example, even in the most high-pressure situations.

One of her proudest moments? Taking part in an international training camp with units from across Europe, the US and Ireland — where her team’s medical simulation was awarded 'Best Stand'.

"It’s an experience that shapes you — in all the best ways,” she says.

We're proud to have veterans, reservists and armed forces family members like Nina in our team.

Armed Forces Week - Day 4.

At PHL Group, we proudly recognise that the Armed Forces community extends far beyond those in uniform and includes the families of those who serve too.

One of our team shared the deeply personal story of her husband, a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, who has dedicated nearly two decades to delivering healthcare in some of the most challenging environments — from hurricane disaster zones to Ebola response teams.

As a military spouse, she’s moved house 8 times, navigated long deployments, juggled work and parenting solo, and built incredible resilience along the way.

“Being a partner to someone in the military comes with a level of uncertainty most people never experience. But it’s made me stronger, more empathetic, and a better leader.”

We’re proud to support our colleagues with military connections — whether they’ve served, are serving, or are supporting those who do. As a Silver Award holder in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, PHL Group is committed to living the values of the Armed Forces Covenant every day.

Armed Forces Week

Today, we’re proud to share the story of Kerry Hutchinson, Clinical Team Manager at PHL Group based in Newcastle and former Sergeant in the British Army.

Kerry grew up in a military family, so joining the forces felt like second nature. At just 20, she set her sights on becoming a military policewoman and did exactly that. Her career took her around the world: from jungle training in Belize to exercises across Africa, Canada, and the US. She also spent nine months deployed in Iraq, helping reform local policing and confronting some of the toughest challenges imaginable, including mass casualty incidents and the tragic loss of colleagues.

After suffering a back injury during a blast, Kerry began to consider leaving the military to become a paramedic but with support and rehab, she found a new path: nursing. She successfully transferred into the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps, trained at Birmingham City University, and went on to serve in hospitals and clinics, gaining experience in acute medicine, orthopaedics, and sexual health. Kerry left the Army after 13 years to focus on family life and manage her injury.

“I’ll always strive to do my best,” she says. “From day one, the Army teaches you that you’re part of a family and you show up for each other, especially on the toughest days.”

Armed Forces Week

Meet Major Judith Pashley, one of PHL Group’s extraordinary team members and a proud Army Reservist with over 33 years of service.

Judith joined the then Territorial Army as a young woman determined to carry on her family's legacy of public service even when most of her generation were women without those same opportunities. What started as a short-term plan turned into a lifelong journey, with deployments to Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan as a military nurse.

The Army taught Judith resilience, problem-solving and the true power of teamwork, all of which she brings to her role at PHL Group. One memory that stands out? A young soldier in Iraq, quietly placing body armour over her and gently trying to fit her helmet while she slept through a mortar alarm. “A small gesture that meant the world,” she recalls.

Now a Major, Judith was due to retire this year, but the Army asked her to stay on and she said yes. “Would I do it all again?” she says. “Hell yes. In a heartbeat.”

We're celebrating Armed Forces Week with a daily post - here's your first!

We’re proud to have members of the Armed Forces community among us at PHL Group, from veterans and reservists to serving personnel and their families.

Kicking off the week is Robbie Beech MBE BSc(Hons), Clinical Manager of our Integrated Urgent Care Clinical Assessment Service.

Robbie joined the British Army in 1999, swapping his chef whites for military greens in search of purpose and structure. Though he didn’t become a Chinook pilot (thanks to a failed hearing test!), he found his calling in medicine becoming a Registered Nurse with the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps.

From NATO operations to earning the title of Honorary Firefighter in Tennessee, Robbie’s journey is extraordinary but what he brings to PHL Group is even more valuable: humility, courage and an unshakeable sense of right and wrong.

“I might be direct,” he says, “but everything I do is for the team and the patients.”

Stay tuned this week as we share more stories from the brilliant individuals in our Armed Forces community.

A big thank you to the team at East Barnwell Health Centre for the warm welcome today!

Our CEO, Ross Brand, was delighted to visit and meet the outstanding people behind the care. It was a fantastic opportunity to hear first-hand about the healthcare being delivered to the local community and the real difference it's making.
