A really fascinating piece of research from the University of Edinburgh is suggesting that OCT scans of the macula may reveal important clues about kidney health and could potentially be used for monitoring the progression of kidney disease.
At Feltham Eyecare Centre we find this incredibly intriguing. We have been using OCT technology in practice for over 15 years to support the care of our patientsโ eye health, and it is remarkable to see how this same technology is now being explored in groundbreaking research to help with the understanding and management of chronic diseases.
On a personal note, as a kidney transplant patient, this is something very close to my heart. It is both amazing and encouraging to see how advances in retinal imaging may help clinicians in the future with earlier detection, closer monitoring and improved outcomes for patients.
It also reinforces the powerful idea that the eye can act as a window to the rest of the body. We will certainly be following these developments with great interest.
