RAMS FAILURES - A COSTLY MISTAKE

Are your Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) generic tick-box exercises? That's where most businesses go wrong.

We see it constantly:
• One-size-fits-all RAMS that don't match your actual tasks
• Missing site-specific hazards and controls
• Outdated documents gathering dust
• Non-compliance leading to fines, delays, and worse - injuries

The problem? Traditional RAMS are too vague. They don't capture what's really happening on YOUR site, with YOUR team, doing YOUR specific work.

That's why we're launching the Dave Spencer Consultancy Health & Safety App - and we're looking for beta testers RIGHT NOW.

✅ BETA TRIAL BENEFITS:
• Task-specific RAMS that actually reflect your operations
• Smarter, faster documentation
• Real-time compliance tracking
• Exclusive beta tester discounts (up to 25% off services)
• Direct input into app development
• Priority support from our team

Early adopters will shape the future of H&S compliance. If you're serious about getting RAMS right, this is your chance.

Ready to ditch generic RAMS? Message us today to join the beta trial. Limited spots available.

🫁 BREATHING ISN'T OPTIONAL.

Here's what most small business owners don't realise: Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) isn't just another checkbox on the safety list.

When workers don't understand RPE—or worse, skip it—you're not just breaking compliance. You're setting them up for serious, lasting health problems.

**The Reality:**

Dust, fumes, chemicals—they don't just disappear. They accumulate in the lungs over time.

Acute effects? Immediate coughing, shortness of breath, irritation. But the real damage? That's chronic. Silicosis. COPD. Asthma. Lung scarring. These conditions can develop years later and follow your workers for life.

And here's the kicker—by then, it's too late to prevent.

**Why RPE Fails:**

❌ Workers don't know how to fit it properly
❌ They don't understand WHY it matters
❌ It's uncomfortable, so they skip it
❌ Managers haven't trained them on the hazards

**What You Need to Do:**

✅ Identify the respiratory hazards in YOUR workplace
✅ Provide the RIGHT RPE for each hazard
✅ Train workers on proper fit, use, and maintenance
✅ Make it non-negotiable—every single time

Your team's lungs depend on it. Your business's liability depends on it.

Don't wait for a health crisis. Get it right now.

⚠️ 𝐆𝐀𝐒 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐓𝐘: 𝐔𝐍𝐑𝐄𝐆𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐃

An unregistered gas installer in Cheshire has been sentenced to 240 hours of unpaid work after carrying out illegal gas work between 2021 and 2023.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤: unqualified work led to a gas leak inside one property and false Gas Safety Certificates being issued using fake registration numbers.

🚨 THE DANGERS
Unregistered gas work can cause:
• Gas leaks
• Fires and explosions
• Carbon monoxide poisoning
• Serious injury or death

✅ PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS
Always ensure gas work is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer:
• Ask to see their ID and registration number
• Check www.gassaferegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500
• Never accept work from unregistered installers
• Keep all Gas Safety Certificates for your records

⚖️ THE CONSEQUENCES
Carrying out gas work without registration is ILLEGAL and can result in:
• Criminal prosecution
• Community orders
• Fines up to £2,000+
• Victim surcharge payments
• Reputational damage

If you're responsible for gas appliances at your workplace, this is non-negotiable. Gas safety isn't an area for shortcuts or cost-cutting.

🔊 CONTROLLING NOISE AT WORK

Many people are exposed to noise levels at work that may be harmful, leading to permanent hearing damage. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Protecting your hearing is as important as any other safety measure on site. Here's what you need to know:

🛡️ 𝐍𝐎𝐈𝐒𝐄 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐄 𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐈𝐓𝐒
• 80dB – Daily exposure action value
• 85dB – Peak exposure action value
• Above these levels, hearing protection is REQUIRED

✅ 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐋 𝐌𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐄𝐒
• Reduce noise at source (use quieter equipment)
• Isolate noisy equipment away from workers
• Provide and enforce hearing protection (earplugs, ear defenders)
• Rotate staff away from high-noise areas
• Regular hearing checks for exposed workers

⚠️ 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐊
Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent. Once it's gone, it's gone. Protect your ears NOW to avoid problems later.

If your workplace exposes workers to harmful noise levels, we can help you develop a noise control strategy that keeps your team safe and compliant.

Book your free consultation today. Your hearing is worth it.

👷 WINTER SAFETY WARNING: Hoodies & Beanies Under Hard Hats

As temperatures drop, we're seeing more workers wearing hoodies or beanies under their safety helmets to keep warm. This practice is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and puts everyone at risk.

⚠️ THE RISKS:

• Compromises helmet fit – interfering with the protective harness system
• Narrows field of vision – increasing collision risk with machinery
• Helmet can fall from height – endangering those below
• Helmets must be worn to manufacturer specifications
• A falling hard hat from height can cause severe injury

🛡️ HSE REQUIREMENTS:

Head protection must:
✓ Be in good condition
✓ Fit properly and be worn correctly
✓ Not interfere with other PPE
✓ Come from reputable suppliers

❄️ STAYING WARM SAFELY:

Only use manufacturer-approved head warmers designed for safety helmets. These maintain proper fit without compromising protection.

Remember: A safety helmet withstands ONE lifesaving impact. Any significant knock means immediate replacement.

Your safety is never worth compromising. Workers are the most valuable asset on any site.

⚠️ Falls from Ladders: Simple Precautions That Save Lives

If you or your team use ladders regularly, here are the essential precautions you must take:

🔍 Before You Climb:
✅ Inspect the ladder for damage, cracks, bent rungs, or worn feet
✅ Check the weight rating—never exceed it
✅ Ensure you have the right type and height for the task

🪜 Setting Up Safely:
✅ Place on firm, level ground—avoid soft soil, ice, or uneven surfaces
✅ Angle extension ladders at 75° (1 metre out for every 4 metres up)
✅ Secure the ladder at the top, and at the base
✅ Extend at least 1 metre above the landing point

🧗 While Working:
✅ Maintain 3 points of contact at all times
✅ Face the ladder when climbing up or down
✅ Keep your body centred between the side rails
✅ Never overreach—move the ladder instead
✅ Don't carry heavy or bulky items—use a tool belt or hoist

Recently from the HSE notice, a horticultural company has been 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 £𝟖𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎 after an employee suffered serious injuries after falling from a ladder.
The employee had been tasked to check irrigation that was watering plants contained in hanging baskets.
As the man climbed the ladder, it fell and collapsed under him, resulting in five broken ribs and a partially collapsed lung.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that company failed to ensure so far as is reasonably practicable the health, safety and welfare at work of all their employees. In this instance, there was a failure to ensure that work at height was planned and carried out in a manner which was so far as is reasonably practicable safe.

If your business involves working at height, make sure your team has proper training, risk assessments, and safe systems of work in place.

👋 Internal Audits: Not Just for the Big Players

Whether you run a small joinery business or manage a growing company, internal audits are one of the smartest investments you can make in your Health and Safety system.

Here's what regular internal audits do for your business:

✅ Catch compliance gaps before HSE inspectors do
✅ Keep your RAMS, risk assessments, and policies up to date
✅ Identify hazards and near misses before they turn into costly accidents
✅ Demonstrate due diligence to clients, insurers, and auditors
✅ Build confidence in your team that safety matters

Think of it like this: you wouldn't skip servicing your van because it's running fine today. Your safety systems need the same attention.

Many small businesses assume audits are expensive, time-consuming, or "only for big corporations." The reality? A simple, structured review every few months can save you thousands in fines, downtime, and legal headaches.

Internal audits aren't about finding fault—they're about finding solutions before problems escalate.

Need help setting up a practical internal audit process that fits your business? Let's chat.
