Last night at the SLSGB Summit 2026, Oscar was honoured with the Hero of the Surf Award, receiving national recognition for the courageous rescue he performed at Saunton in April 2025.

While surfing, Oscar spotted 60-year-old paddleboarder Gavin Bowden face-down in the water after being struck by his own board, leaving him temporarily paralysed.

Without hesitation, Oscar paddled over, lifted Gavin’s head above the water and carefully secured him onto his surfboard. Using hand signals, Oscar alerted his father Danny on the shore that help was needed.

Oscar then remained with Gavin for around 30 minutes in difficult sea conditions, keeping him calm and positioning them safely away from breaking waves while they waited for support from the RNLI lifeboat crew from Appledore.

Thanks to Oscar’s quick thinking, calmness and skill in the water, Gavin’s life was saved.

Congratulations Oscar from everyone at Saunton Sands SLSC—the committee, trustees and club members. This national recognition is incredibly well deserved for such an outstanding act of bravery.
