You may have seen ‘d/Deaf’ used online, maybe from us or elsewhere, but what does it mean? What’s the difference? 💭

This distinction is intentional, and here's what it means:

The term "deaf" (lowercase) refers to anyone who has limited hearing, including those who may be severely hard of hearing.

On the other hand, "Deaf" (uppercase) is used to describe individuals who have been deaf since birth or before they began to speak, known as prelingually deaf. This distinction is crucial, as Deaf individuals often communicate in sign language as their primary language. For many Deaf people, English serves as a second language, making it challenging to grasp complex messages in English.

The Deaf community is vibrant and close-knit, with its own culture and identity rooted in a shared language. Our mission encompasses the entire d/Deaf community.

However, being d/Deaf is very fluid and no two people are the same.

For example, Amy S / , our Social Media Consultant has been profoundly deaf since birth in both ears so would identify with being Deaf, however, she isn’t a sign language user and English is her only language!

…and Amy M / , our founder of LWHL was born with a severe hearing loss and wears two hearing aids she identifies as deaf and English is her first language however is learning Sign language as a 2nd language.

The work we do at Living with hearing loss is for the whole wide d/Deaf community a space for everyone to be whoever they identify as - Not one size fits all ! 💖

Do you resonate with d/Deaf?

This month is Glaucoma Awareness Month, and as such, we want to highlight some of the research we've supported on the condition, starting with Professor James Morgan, who's research has improved our understanding of sight loss in people with glaucoma.

Did you know that the increased pressure inside the eye in glaucoma causes damage to retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), which are the nerve cells that send visual information from the eye to the brain. Professor Morgan‘s work was based on the idea that sight loss in glaucoma begins when these cells start slowly degenerating, rather than at the point the cells die, as some other researchers believe.

During his early research career, Prof Morgan and others did indeed prove this to be the case in animal studies, but needed to show that this was also happening in humans. To do this, he was awarded a grant from Fight for Sight in 2015 , with the hopes that this work could lead to new way to spot the early signs, and develop new treatments to slow or even prevent sight loss.
