Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) – Important Update for Patients
You may have seen news reports today saying that Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is now available from GPs for weight loss. We’d like to clarify what this means for our patients in Humber and North Yorkshire.
Tirzepatide is not currently available from GP practices for weight loss only on the NHS anywhere in our region.
⛔️ Please do not contact your GP to request it for weight loss at this time. We will update patients as soon as it becomes available.
💊 What about for type 2 diabetes?
Tirzepatide may be prescribed for some patients with type 2 diabetes, but only under strict NHS criteria, including:
• HbA1c 53 or above
• Already on or intolerant to multiple diabetes medications (e.g. metformin and an SGLT2 inhibitor such as dapagliflozin or empagliflozin)
If you think you may qualify, please book a routine appointment with our diabetes team.
🔄 Why isn’t it available for weight loss yet?
The NHS needs time to:
• Safely introduce this new service
• Train healthcare staff
• Manage very high levels of demand
A staged rollout via a commissioned specialist weight management service is planned. This will allow patients with the greatest clinical need to be prioritised first and ensures the service can be delivered safely and sustainably.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
The NHS provides a wide range of advice and tools to support healthy weight loss. We understand that many people are looking for support in managing their weight and so we’re working hard to improve access to services and new treatments for people living with obesity.
