Something new for Spring 2025!

Alongside psychological therapies, I am now offering psychology-informed COACHING for those wishing to move towards their goals more effectively.

This is a shorter-term piece of work, informed by EMDR therapy, to help people identify and reduce the barriers standing in the way of achieving their goals.

I could not agree more - language around birth can lead to postnatal PTSD - we need to do more about this. I have recently worked with several mothers who have experienced this - so glad to have this highlighted in the media.

A midwives' report into language used during labour and childbirth finds it should be changed.

Such a good explanation…

Trauma is a highly activated incomplete biological response to threat, frozen in time. For example, when we prepare to fight or to flee, muscles throughout our entire body are tensed in specific patterns of high energy readiness.

When we are unable to complete the appropriate actions, we fail to discharge the tremendous energy generated by our survival preparations. This energy becomes fixed in specific patterns of neuromuscular readiness. The person then stays in a state of acute and then chronic arousal and dysfunction in the central nervous system.

Traumatized people re not suffering from a disease in the nomal sense of the word- they have become stuck in an aroused state. It is difficult if not impossible to function normally under these circumstances.

With everything going on in the world just now, it can feel overwhelming at times. The helplessness we are feeling is very normal but not easy. And there is a lot of fear, too.

Here is a link to a document written by Dr Russ Harris, a specialist in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and published by the World Health Organisation, for dealing with stressful events outwith our control.

An Illustrated Guide

Heard a wonderful story today that is very fitting for Children’s Mental Health Week…

I was talking to someone who was recalling that there was a boy in her class in upper primary school who told people he did ballet. When the other pupils heard, he started to be ridiculed for his hobby.

The teachers explored this, discovered this super talented kid was due to appear in the Nutcracker…so the school bought tickets for all the pupils and celebrated his success with him, which helped to reframe his talents in the other pupils‘ eyes.

A reminder that children’s mental health starts with all of us adults. We all have a responsibility to spot when something may be harmful and do something about it ❤️✨
