Every part of your body and your baby has been perfectly designed. Just look at this umbilical cord!ββββββββ

For anyone who doesn't know, the umbilical cord attaches your baby to the placenta.ββββββββ

They commonly have 3 vessels - 2 arteries and a vein.ββββββββ

The blood, oxygen and nutrients are taken from the placenta to the baby, and then the deoxygenated blood is returned back to your placenta.ββββββββ

This cord is literally carrying everything your baby needs to grow!ββββββββ
ββββββββ
When your baby is born, the cord (and placenta) remains filled with a significant amount of blood. Where possible, this blood will be given time to move into the baby, known as optimal cord clamping. This gives your baby up to 1/3 more blood than if the cord is cut immediately!ββββββββ

The cord will then be cut, (PS there are other options such as Lotus Birth) it will shrivel and dry up in the first few days after birth, usually falling off in the first 2 weeks.ββββββββ

Our bodies are incredible.ββββββββ

How do you feel about umbilical cords? Some people freak out about them, which is understandable if you have never seen one before π Personally I LOVE them they are fascinating! ββββββββ
