Today is World Autism Awareness Day 💙

As a therapist, I often notice how many misconceptions about autism still exist... here are a few myths:
❌Autistic people don’t feel empathy
Many autistic individuals experience empathy deeply — it may simply be expressed in ways that aren’t always recognised.

❌If someone is autistic, it will be obvious
Autism isn’t always visible. Many people mask, adapt, and move through the world in ways that don’t fit common expectations.

❌Autistic people prefer to be alone
Connection is often deeply valued — it may just look different, with different rhythms, needs, or boundaries.

❌Good eye contact means comfort and engagement
For some, eye contact can feel overwhelming. Looking away may actually support listening, processing, and staying present.

❌If someone appears to be coping, there isn’t a struggle
Masking and adapting can take significant energy, and the impact isn’t always visible from the outside.

✅Autism isn’t a lack; it’s a different way of experiencing, processing, and relating to the world.
And when curiosity replaces assumptions, more space opens for understanding, acceptance, and compassion.

"When we can find a way and a therapist to explore our thoughts, our feelings and our behaviours, we can then begin to understand what our challenges are, and then it gives us choices and directions."

Fantastic to see Odette Hamilton and Julia Samuel on BBC Breakfast this morning. They raised so many important points about therapy and encouraged women over 50 to seek professional support if they're struggling, as part of our No More Stiff Upper Lip campaign.

Odette spoke about her own experience of therapy, how it helped her to a 'better place' and why it's a good idea to get help when you need it and not leave things piling up on you.

Julia told viewers how speaking to a therapist is different to talking to friends and urged people to look for a therapist from a professional body, such as BACP.

It's a weekend for reading. I've just finished reading *The Honesty Box* (a wonderful recommendation from a client) and it’s such a beautiful, much-needed book. Lucy Brazier writes so openly about what it can be like to be in a relationship with someone who is neurodivergent — the love, the challenges, the misunderstandings and moments of deep clarity.

Her story shows just how life-changing a diagnosis can be, and doesn't shy away from the new challenges this also brings. The book feels raw and gentle at the same time — honest, curious, and deeply human. I can highly recommend it!

Neurodiversity comes up often in the therapy room, and I regularly support clients as they explore their own journeys, or those of the people they love. This book feels like an important companion to those conversations. If you are reading this weekend, enjoy and stay warm!
