Flu (influenza) is a common infectious viral illness. You can catch flu all year round, but it’s especially common in winter. This is why it’s also known as seasonal flu.

You can catch flu many times because flu viruses change regularly. Your body won’t have a natural resistance to the new versions.

A fever is usually when your body temperature is 38°C or higher. You may feel warm, cold or shivery.

You can find out if you have a fever (high temperature) by using a thermometer to take your temperature.

You should try to stay at home and avoid other people if you have a high temperature, to avoid spreading potential illness.

Please check trusted NHS advise before contacting your GP.

A cough is a reflex action to clear your airways of phlegm and irritants such as dust or smoke. It’s rarely a sign of anything serious.

Most coughs clear up within 3 weeks and don’t need any treatment.

A dry cough means it’s tickly and doesn’t produce any mucus (phlegm). A chesty cough means phlegm is produced to help clear your airways.

Please check trusted NHS advise before contacting your GP.

Some people in Glasgow City Centre have taken seriously ill after smoking crack or freebase co***ne. This could be because it is very strong, it’s cut with something dangerous, or fumes from home made pipes. It could also be linked to taking other drugs. IF YOU ARE SMOKING CRACK OR FREEBASE: Don’t use when you are alone – be with someone who can help. Take a small amount first – test the strength Avoid plastic or homemade pipes - use a glass stem if available
Avoid taking with other drugs - this increases the overdose risk.
Watch out for unusual taste, colour, or effects – stop if it feels wrong.
Always have naloxone available - Naloxone doesn’t work on crack alone, but it will if opioids are involved — sometimes these are present without the person
knowing. Call 999 right away if someone feels unwell (collapse,
chest pain, breathing problems, seizures). Stay with them until help comes.
