E R B’S P A L S Y

Erb’s Palsy, a form of obstetric brachial plexus disorder.
__
Erb's palsy typically affects one or two of every 1,000 babies. It is an injury that occurs when the nerves in a baby’s upper arm are damaged as a result of a lesion at Erb’s point - the area near the baby’s neck where the fifth and sixth cranial nerves merge to create the upper point of the brachial plexus. This is frequently caused by shoulder dystocia during a difficult birth. Infants with this condition usually can’t move the affected shoulder or upper arm, but they may be able to wiggle their fingers.
__
A baby with Erb's Palsy may exhibit weakness in the affected arm, or possibly won't be able to move it. Symptoms can range from signs of weakness or soreness to total or partial paralysis of the arm. The most common signs to look out for include: • Limpness in the arm, held against the side of the body and bent at the elbow.
• Decreased ability to grip with the hand on the affected side.
• Partial or full paralysis.
• Loss of sensory and/or motor function in the upper arm.
• Arm numbness.
• Impaired circulatory, muscular, and nervous development.
__
Mild cases of Erb’s palsy may clear up within three to six months with physical therapy. Around 70 to 80% of all cases usually clear up within a year with proper and consistent treatment. The younger the infant is when treatment begins, the better the results are. In some rare cases, infants may live with lifelong problems due to Erb’s palsy, and may suffer permanent functional loss in the affected arm.
__
The most common treatment for Erb's palsy is physical therapy. The type of exercises we use for an infant are very mild and gentle and commonly include massage and stretching as well as a range of strength, stimulation and motion exercises.
__
If you're concerned that your child is showing symptoms of Erb's palsy, or that the condition in your child is not improving, don't hesitate to get in touch with us or your GP👶

Kneeling is a brilliant way to encourage crawling skills. This skill usually emerges around the 7-8 month mark in your child but once your child is able to sit independently when placed (usually between 6-8 months) you can start working in this position. You can continue to encourage play in this position in all ages.
___
⭐️ Kneeling allows for weight bearing through the knees which will help strengthen the hips and the stretch the hip flexor.
⭐️ It is perfect for strengthening all of those key muscles in the trunk of the body as it activates core muscles.
⭐️Helps to develop muscles in the shoulders and arms by encouraging weight shifting and crossing the midline through play.
___
Kneeling to play is best done at the appropriate height for your child. It can then be made more or less challenging depending on the position and/or surface used.
___
For the babies we recommend using a couch cushion, stack of pillows or overturned basket. (If using a hard surface be careful if your child has any balance issues).
___
Make sure the surface you use is placed on the floor and lay your child face dow on top with their legs parallel, knees on the floor - with their hips directly over their knees. Support your child at the hips and ensure their elbows are placed directly under their shoulders with their hands in front.
___
Place a toy, book or mirror on top of the surface to encourage you let child to lift their head and chest. Move items further out of reach to make this position harder.
___
For the older children use a low table, bench or chair (again be careful of those hard surfaces and any balancing concerns). Or why not try kneeling at vertical surface such as a wall/mirror with play items stuck on. This is a great tool for also promoting independent play.

Here at Gaynor Robey Physiotherapy HQ we are celebrating Down syndrome awareness day by rocking our crazy socks!!

Here’s a little bit of information you might find useful, on how physiotherapy can help your Down syndrome child…..

🧦 Why Down syndrome children need physiotherapy?

Many children with Down Syndrome have a degree of floppiness of their muscles (hypotonia) and this affects each child to a different degree. Low muscle tone, as well as reduced strength and endurance, make it hard to learn gross motor skills.

Children with Down Syndrome also have increased flexibility in their joints (hypermobility), and you may first notice this in your child’s hips as their knees fall to the sides when they are lying on their back. Children with Down Syndrome also have short arms and legs relative to the length of their trunk. This makes it harder to prop themselves up when they are learning to sit, or more difficult to climb on furniture.

🧦 How can physiotherapy help?

Physical activity will help to promote a child's gross motor skills and increase their muscle strength. They will need lots of stimulation through handling and play. We will provide you with activities to carry out to help your child with their gross motor skills. Repetition and practice will help a child to increase their muscle strength and ability.

🧦 Give us a call if you have any concerns you may have regarding your Childs gross motor development. We are here to help!

T A N D E M S T A N C E 👣

Tandem Stance, or standing in tandem, is when you step with one foot directly in front of the other, so that the toes of the back foot are almost touching the heels of the front foot.
__
We practise the tandem stance a lot when we want to work on balance, and practise makes perfect! So if you find your child can’t quite get to grips with it at first, keep going and you should see steady progress. Practise it with them too - you may be surprised to find where your own balance is at!

The tandem stance is also good for working on: 🦶Postural stability
🦶Static balance
🦶Lower extremity strength
🦶Core strength
🦶Proprioception (body awareness)

Here are some tips for practising at home:
👣Start with semi-tandem (feet slightly staggered) then progress from there.
👣Watch for good alignment of the feet: both feet should be parallel.
👣Avoid intoeing or outtoeing (feet turning inwards or outwards), use a balance beam or tape a line on the floor - having a visual guide like this really helps.
👣Encourage good hip and trunk alignment by providing some support if they do wobble a lot, that way they can get on with practising the exercise.

Gaynor Robey Physiotherapy is 1 year old today!!

Thank you so much to all the families that have trusted us to care for their little ones. It’s has been such a busy and wonderful year.
As a clinic we have gone from strength to strength. Having completed specialist courses in the treatment and management on cerebral palsy as well as completing a course on hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, we are able to help a support even more children within our community.
We are looking forward to the year ahead, with the completion of our very own clinic to look forward to, qualifying in Pilates for kids and teens and looking to take on more staff members to increase availability.
We are so proud of what we have achieved this far and would like to thank everyone again for all their support. Here’s to another amazing year 💪🏽👣

Thank you to all our amazing patients and their families for taking the time to leave us such lovely reviews! 🥰🥰

Gross motor milestones for your T H R E E year old. At this age they are so full of beans, and love nothing more than to show you everything they can do! 🤸‍♀️
__
But what are the key things they should be able to do at three years? Here's what to look out for:

💫Stand on one foot for 3 seconds.

💫Walk up and down stairs without holding onto the railing, reciprocating (one foot on each step)

💫Jump over a line

💫Jump forwards approx 2 feet

💫Jump off a step with both feet simultaneously

💫Kick a stationary ball approx 6 feet forwards

💫Throw a ball both under and over hand

💫Independently get on/off a tricycle and pedal approx 20 feet
__
These gross motor milestones are loads of fun and there are plenty of ways you can encourage your child to work towards them for example using made up games, obstacle courses, family sports days, fun little challenges - the more parents, siblings and friends participate, the more your toddler will want to join in too!
__
Always remember that rates of development are variable and unique to each child. If your child takes longer than expected to reach any milestone it is not a sign of any long term implications. But if you do have any questions or concerns about your child's development, do not hesitate to contact us!

__
Therabands, or resistance bands, are extremely versatile, and fun! Resistance band exercise helps with coordination and strength generally, and with any injury rehabilitation. They can be used by anyone of any age and fitness level, which is why they are such a brilliantly simple and effective piece of kit, not to mention inexpensive and very easy to carry around!
__
We often use Therabands with children whose conditions may result in muscle weakness, making things like gripping a pencil, colouring in, buttoning up clothes, climbing and other types of play, and maintaining posture with a strong core a struggle. A consistent strengthening routine can help with these skills.
__
The Theraband encourages a child's sense of self-movement and body position (or proprioception) and is often included within a sensory-based program: slowly pulling and maintaining a position on an expanded band creates resistance, providing proprioceptive input that children need.
__
Theraband exercise increases body awareness, focus and concentration, improves balance and coordination and can dramatically reduce hyperactivity.
__
If you'd like to try an exercise with your child, you could start with a fun stretch to get arms and legs moving: First, have your child lay on their stomach with their legs bent, feet in the air. Put the theraband over their feet and have them stretch the band outward with their feet.
__
For the legs, have your child put their foot in the middle of the band. With both hands, have them stretch it over their foot almost all the way up to their head. Switch feet after holding for a few seconds👣
