A recent longitudinal study (WHAM) examines how hearing aid use relates to socio-emotional well-being, finding modest, specific benefits: hearing aid uptake was linked to lower depression in people without tinnitus and reduced loneliness in adults over 65, while no clear associations were seen for anxiety, distress, or emotional loneliness: https://buff.ly/Idcjxqz

“We’ve seen fantastic progress in satisfaction, app use, and daily wear time,” he says. “However, when we ask why people delay getting hearing instruments, the answers haven’t changed much in three years since the last Eurotrak survey. That tells us this isn’t a technology issue, but rather a mindset issue. We believe that this mindset is still shaped by stigma, whether people realize it or not.”

More data from Eurotrak UK 2025 indicates that the primary reasons people avoid using hearing instruments remain largely unchanged since 2022, with stigma and outdated perceptions continuing to shape decisions, even as modern devices are far more discreet and capable than ever: https://buff.ly/qL7d72u

A recent scoping review by the University of Ottawa shows adults with hearing loss still face communication and accessibility barriers at every stage of air travel, from booking to post-flight.

Researchers identified assistive listening technologies, alongside properly trained staff as key facilitators for improving accessibility when it comes to travel, notably that assistive listening technologies should be available in all areas of airport terminals: https://buff.ly/DC9ey0R

"The ushers advised me to test the device before the show began. The venue plays a recorded message through the assistive listening system for this purpose before each show. If I could hear the recording from my seat, I would know that the device was working."

Shari Eberts writes about her recent experience of visiting The Bardovan theatre, showing how effective assistive listening technology, combined with properly trained staff, can create an inclusive experience for patrons with hearing loss. The first item on her list? installing a quality assistive listening system, and making sure it actually works: https://buff.ly/BtEQLp1

"It is time for businesses to treat hearing health as part of wellness. Just as they measure air quality and lighting, they must begin measuring hearing conditions. And just as they invest in ergonomic chairs and mindfulness apps, they should invest in technologies and designs that reduce hearing effort."

When people have to work harder than usual to understand speech, especially in noisy or acoustically poor environments, it has a knock on effect on not only our wellbeing, but also the way we work.

Here, Bill Schiffmiller explores the often overlooked problem of auditory fatigue, the research behind it, and his own personal experiences with Auracast, along with its potential to reduce listening effort in workplaces as well as public venues: https://buff.ly/AeKbHRs

Assistive listening technologies play a crucial role in enabling people with hearing loss to participate fully in public life. However, the presence of such systems is only beneficial if users know they are available. That’s where clear, consistent assistive listening signage becomes vital: https://buff.ly/53radNl

“We’re excited to see how many venues are installing Auracast. However, hearing loops will be the main technology used for assistive listening in venues for several years yet. Happily, the two technologies can both be present in the same space, meaning visitors can have the best of both worlds.”

RNID’s Technology Lead, Alastair Moore, explains how telecoil-equipped hearing devices can be used to access Auracast: https://buff.ly/pzmaM4x
