We are appealing to find our gorgeous senior citizen, Jock, a family who can provide the end of life care he needs.

Jock is almost 15 years old and came to the Shelter around four weeks ago after his owner’s health declined. Since being with us, our team and vets have noticed signs of dementia and recently Jock has become more confused, occasionally forgetting he has back legs to walk on! He takes pain medication but otherwise is physically well.

We feel that it would be in Jock’s best interests to spend the time he has left in an understanding home with a family who can help him feel safe, loved and secure.

Jock has a lovely personality. He adores people and will happily greet everyone with a waggy tail, and he absolutely LOVES a good fuss – he’ll gently rest his head on your leg when he’s ready for cuddles.

He would be happiest in a quiet adult home (ages 16+), as he can get a bit anxious around children. He is not a fan of other dogs and will chase cats so he needs to be the only pet.

He doesn’t need to go on walks so he’d love a spacious garden where he can potter around at his own pace. Jock is a great passenger in the car, especially if you have a ramp to help him in and out, and he’s perfectly content being left alone for a few hours with the radio on.

If you’ve got a quiet home, a comfy spot on the sofa, and plenty of affection to give, Jock could be your perfect match - email 👉 dogs@gawa.org.uk 👈 to find out more!

✨Osteoarthritis✨
This is a degenerative joint disease in which the cartilage gradually breaks down, causing inflammation, pain, reduced range of motion and stiffness within the joint

It doesn’t just occur in old dogs, it can be found in young dogs too, especially if there are other contributing factors such as obesity or orthopaedic issues

What you may not know is:
☀️ Hot weather can aggravate this condition by heating up the joint and causing more inflammation and pain
🔵Having to keep dogs inside because of the heat can also cause joints to stiffen up and affect their mobility

✨Things you can do to help✨
🟣 Cooling mats can help to regulate your dogs body temperature
🔵Going for walks during cooler parts of the day can also help reduce joint inflammation as well as specific stretches and exercises
🟣 Making sure you dog stays hydrated is also important for them and their joints

🐴 Did You Know a Sore Back Can Cause Neck Problems Too?

It’s all connected, literally!

The long back muscles, like the longissimus dorsi, don’t just stop at the back. They run from the pelvis all the way up into the neck, connecting across multiple joints and vertebrae.

👉 So when the back is sore or tight, the horse may:

🐎 Brace through the neck
🐎 Struggle to flex or bend correctly
🐎 Show resistance in the bridle or contact
🐎 Compensate with tension in the poll or jaw

💡 That’s why a full- body approach in massage is so important. Treating one area without addressing the chain won’t give lasting results.

𝗖𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 is a simple way to tone your horse's abdominal muscles. It's a bit like us doing sit-ups.

Other benefits of canter include:
✅ Warming up the back
✅ Improving back suppleness
✅ Conditioning the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems
✅ Strengthening and mobilising the thoracic sling muscles
✅ Supports good posture
✅ Improving muscular strength and power

What a great excuse to go for canter! Just remember rhythm and balance - and it's important to canter equally on both reins.

✨Regular stretching is a great addition to your weekly routine and your animal does not have to be in work or competing to benefit from regular stretches✨

🟣 They have been shown to increase stride length
🔵Improve flexibility

🟣Improve muscle mass in the deep spinal stability muscles

🔵Reduce the likelihood of injury

🟣Improve muscle tone

They can be tailored to your animals’ needs, especially if they are recovering from injury or you are wanting to introduce them into your routine.

If you think you horses could benefit from a personalised exercise plan or physiotherapy please get in touch! 🐾🐎
