After years of waiting for this moment, you've finally got an autism diagnosis. But maybe now you're left thinking 'Now what?'. You've got the confirmation but the moment feels a bit anticlimactic. By Caitlin Imray, MBACPPublished on 26th September, 2024

These are conversations that must be prioritised, for the lack of public discourse around the mental health implications of menopause has dangerous consequences for countless women.

The recent announcement of Nicola Bulley’s partner agreeing to participate in a documentary about her tragic disappearance has sparked renewed conversations about the intersection of menopause, mental health and public perception. While there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Nicola Bulley...

When a parent, partner or close relative in our lives passes away, it can be an overwhelming time, especially when children and young individuals are involved. While our instinct is to shield them from pain and sorrow, it's worth considering the following points:

What happens after we die? Where did they go?” By Mary WatsonPublished on 10th September, 2024

It's an old trope, but the one of the teenager staying up all hours and being nearly impossible to wake up is not far from the reality for many parents. It can be frustrating when you're constantly battling your teen to get them up and out the door at a reasonable time. It's also true that this isn't about them being lazy; your tween or nearly teenage child needs their sleep more than ever due to the physical, psychological, and emotional demands of adolescence.

So, how can you balance your teen's sleep needs with their need to be up and out the door at a specific time so they're not late for school? Let's examine teenagers' sleep cycles and how you can create a morning routine that works without setting off fireworks and gets them up and ready for the day....

Most adults with ADHD are simply looking for a reasonable sense of cause-and-effect, an expectation that the extra efforts required to manage ADHD will produce reasonable outcomes. So, if a loved one of yours has adult ADHD and is struggling, don’t force-feed obvious suggestions. Instead, try listening for understanding and with empathy.

Key pointsAdults with ADHD often feel misunderstood and judged by others. It is difficult for people without ADHD to understand the challenges it poses.Food poisoning is an example most people can relate to that shows how something good can turn noxious.Russell Ramsay, Ph.D., ABPPRethinking Adult ADH...

Unlike stress due to overwork alone, trauma-related stress tends to be associated with emotional exhaustion, a feeling of detachment, low self-esteem, relationship struggles and difficulty in finding meaning in one's work or life. This magnifies the classic symptoms of burnout, which can make the healing process more complex, as not only do we need to recuperate, but we also need to address and heal the underlying trauma.

Burnout is frequently profoundly linked to unresolved trauma, which fundamentally alters the way our bodies and minds react to stress. When a person experiences trauma, it can leave a deep and lasting mark on their nervous system, keeping them in a state of hypervigilance. By Dr Pauline ChiariziaPu...

The value of free speech and informed opinionsIn the UK, freedom of speech is a cherished right, one that allows us to express our opinions and engage in healthy debate. However, with this freedom comes the responsibility to ensure our opinions are informed and not merely a regurgitation of sensatio...

Research published in Nature Reviews Neuroscience highlights that stress can shrink the prefrontal cortex, the brain region responsible for executive functions, such as decision-making and self-control, while enlarging the amygdala, which governs fear and anxiety.

Family relationships can be complex for anyone, but as someone who identifies as LGBTIQA+, navigating these connections might come with unique challenges. Your journey of self-discovery and acceptance is deeply personal and sometimes fraught with fear, misunderstanding, or even rejection from those closest to you. Counselling can play a crucial role in supporting you as you navigate family dynamics, recognise your core self, and maintain communicative and healthy relationships with your family members.

Understanding and accepting your true self is a fundamental step in leading a fulfilling life. For many LGBTIQA+ members, this process involves coming to terms with your sexual orientation or gender identity, which can be a challenging and confusing experience, especially when family dynamics are in...

Beyond providing access to private therapy, emergency services organisations must foster a culture that prioritises mental health and well-being. This includes regular check-ins with personnel, mandatory mental health training for supervisors and managers, and the creation of peer support programs.

If you are an emergency services employee struggling with your mental health, know that you are not alone. Counselling can provide you and your families with the specialised support you need. Or if you are in the HR department of a private or NHS hospital and you want to do more for your staff, take...

Death anxiety, the fear of death or the dying process, is a common yet deeply personal experience that can profoundly impact an individual's mental and emotional well-being.

Death anxiety is a profound and challenging experience, but it is possible to manage and alleviate this fear through counselling and mindfulness techniques. Counselling offers a safe, supportive environment to explore and address fears about mortality, while mindfulness practices can help individual...

“No problem,” you might say, “I’m great at multitasking.” But you are wrong. Research has shown time and again that despite what people claim, multitasking always leads to poorer performance. Even worse, it dulls the brain. According to a study conducted at Gresham College, just having an email sitting unread in your inbox while you try to concentrate on a task can damage your problem-solving performance by an equivalent of 10 IQ points.

If we want to preserve our brains, now and for years to come, we are going to have to tweak our lifestyle. You probably already know that poor sleep, poor diet, and poor exercise put your brain at risk, so I’m not going to repeat those here. Instead, let’s examine some often overlooked habits th...
